Great explanation. Just what I had been looking for. It was hard to find. But, there must be an actual formula or an algorithm a calculator uses to find the p value in a chi square test. Been looking for that, too. Can only find how to find the p value after calculating the z value.

This explained it better to me than my text or tutors. I still do not understand what the null hypothesis is and how you figure out whether to reject it or not. I understand how to calculate the chi-square and the degrees of freedom, I understand how to use the critical chart to find the right p value. I get lost at the greater than and less than signs and the null hypothesis part, somebody help please! I would send and email but I could not find it.

I don't get it. We can directly accept or reject null hypotheses based on chi-square value is less than or greater than 0.05, right?then why again P value what is it's use?

Good question, but I believe he is correct. His hypothesis is testing for goodness of fit. The formula you are using is testing to determine whether the variables are independent or dependent. They are similar but different. Same chapter in my textbook but two different sections.

how to calculate exact p-value, I have some values and my exam wants me to calculate exact p value. I am calculating fungus as a risk factor for revision surgery. 3/30 patients who had revision surgery had fungus, 27/30 didn't have fungus. 3/70 patients who had their first surgery also had fungus but 67/70 didn't have fungus. Total patients are 100. I have to calculate atleast 10 risk factors like these and they all ask for exact p values. Please please help me figure out p-value with this one so I can calculate for the rest of the risk factors myself.

You need to look it up online. It's not something you calculate, you simply use the sheet to find the P-value.

The p-value is a value that is not typically calculated, and so we use the p-table that gives us a range of where it is, as opposed to a precise numrer. This is because we will typically test to see only if our p-value falls below the line of the pre-determined p-value for significance, instead of figuring out exactly what the p-value is. Hopefully that makes sense!
