The Lanna Kingdom has been rich with culture and history for centuries. Lanna was once occupied by the Burmese who were eventually driven out of the region with the support of the Siamese. The Lanna Kingdom later became a part of Siam and Chiang Rai remains a fascinating place to visit to experience ancient temples, absorbing culture, skilled handicrafts, delicious local food, friendly people and majestic scenery.
Chiang Rai offers the intrepid traveller a great contrast of attractions and is much more laid back than tourist hotspots further South. My video provides a flavour of what to experience in a daytrip to Chiang Rai however the region has so much more to offer. It is the gateway to the Golden Triangle, an area incorporating Northern Thailand, Myanmar and Laos, which historically became infamous for th6e cultivation of opium. Scenic mountains, stunning waterfalls, alluring temples and charming hill tribes provide visitors with all the ingredients for an exceptional adventure.
Chiang Rai is a 3.5 hour drive North from Chiang Mai however budget airlines do offer several flights a day from major cities in Thailand. Chiang Rai is definitely worth visiting and expect an enthralling experience in picturesque Northern Thailand.
