If the Midwest didn’t have arctic winters Chicago would have more population than NYC or LA. Movie making started in Chicago in the silent film era. Charlie Chaplin and other giants of the budding film industry built sound stages and studios in Chicago as it was supposed to be the film making capital not LA. The studios were built on the Northside and you can still see their remains today. But after a couple of winters Chaplin and his peers decided that Chicagos horrible weather was a hindrance to making films and they all abruptly left for CA.
