OMG!!!! You are reading my mind. I was going to request some Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire. This girl loves an excellent horn section. Saw them together years ago and the best part was when they played together. That was an EXCELLENT horn section. I’m 100% with you on this ride!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

"I'm a Man" performed live @ Tanglewood 1971 shows off more of their chops. IDK when Cetera left but it was really the death of guitarist Terry Kath that put the whole band on life support. They were never the same after that although they did release some successful softer stuff post-kath.

It depends on what you mean by “read music”. Many guitarists cannot read “musical notation”, but that’s because it is not very useful for guitars. But all of them can read guitar tablature- that is a musical notation written specially for guitar.

The great Terry Kath! The rock edge Chicago had died with him. They were never close to the same band without him. He was actually leaving the band. The day he died was the first day he was working on his solo album. Anyone who is a fan should watch The Terry Kath Experience. It's a documentary on his life done by his daughter. Great watch. I highly recommend it.

Imo, the first two albums were very ambitious, driven home by great musicianship including a super-tight horn section, great lead guitar and top-notch composition (for the first most part). Early jazz, rock, pop unique for the day. After that, save for the occasional nugget, they slowly descended for varied reasons. Once bassist Peter Cetera and producer David Foster took over, their trajectory to forgettable Muzak was complete. Still had plenty of hit ballads, airless as they were, but nothing remotely comparable to their earlier glory days. Some will no doubt vehemently disagree with this.

Enjoyed your commentary on this, my favorite Chicago song. I highly recommend you grab their debut album Chicago Transit Authority and listen to it from start to finish at some point. Terry was their guitarist from their beginning until his accidental death in 1978. His soulful baritone voice led some to call him the white Ray Charles. He sang lead on "Introduction", "Make Me Smile" "Colour My World", "Once Or Twice", "Byblos" and many more. If you want to hear Chicago break out the funk, then ”Poem 58" from Chicago Transit Authority" will blow your mind. Terry KILLS IT on guitar.

Wow, Michael you are in for a journey! Early Chicago was so much better than 80’s Peter Cetera Chicago and that was pretty good. It was a band in the true sense of the word. They had three great lead singers and as you heard the musicianship was second to none! A good place to start is “Beginnings”. “Make Me Smile”, “I’m a Man” which is an incredible cover with Terry Kath (The white Ray Charles), Cetera and Robert Lamm taking turns on lead vocal. “Questions 67 & 68”, “Saturday in the Park”, “ Does anybody really know what time it is?“, “Colour My World”, “Feeling Stronger Every Day”. THIS is Chicago. At some point you have to check out the live at Tanglewood version of 25 or 6 to 4. Terry Kath’s lead guitar is off the freaking charts incredible. I am sure someone else already commented on this, but Jimi Hendrix referred to him as better than he was. I don’t know if that’s true but it is certainly high praise

cosmicVox13 There were de facto two BS&Ts. The one that made their first album with Al Kooper at the helm and then everything after. The Everything After band was for me largely Muzak. The original never gets talked about but it was great. The album was Child is Father to the Man. Give a listen to “I Love You More than You’ll Ever Know” and “I Can’t Quit Her” for starters.

Chicago was the first concert I ever went to. My girlfriend and I were in either late Junior High or early High School - at any rate we couldn't drive yet and my girlriend's mother drove us (and attended the concert with us too!) It was awesome! After all these years, I can still say it was my favorite concert of all time. I remember walking out to the car afterwards and realizing my ears were ringing so much from the extremely loud horns, that I couldn't hear right for literally days after. I actually had some hearing loss from that concert - that continues to this day. But you know what? I'd do it all over again!!!!
