2:22 that slow-down (referred to as a ritard. in music theory) is one of the most effective I’ve ever heard. It does three things…it drives home the sincerity of the verse, supports the “never let you go” lyric and it explodes into the chorus. Whoever “produced” that idea is a borderline musical genius for that one little move, alone.

Peter Cetera was the indelible face of Chicago even long after going solo. His inimitable voice and style put a signature stamp on this ballad as the defining sound of "Chicago."

Love Chicago. Peter is truly a gifted singer. One of the very first cassettes I bought to play in my car many years ago. In fact I played it so many times it managed to jam itself in the player, to this day it is still there.

[Verse 1: Jason Scheff, with bandmates] "Everybody needs a little time away" I heard her say, from each other Even lovers need a holiday Far away, from each other [Chorus 1: All] Hold me now It's hard for me to say I'm sorry I just want you to stay [Chorus 2: All] After all that we've been through I will make it up to you, I promise to And after all that's been said and done You're just the part of me I can't let go [Verse 2: Jason Scheff, with bandmates] Couldn't stand to be kept away Just for the day, from your body Wouldn't want to be swept away Far away, from the one that I love [Chorus 1: All] Hold me now It's hard for me to say I'm sorry I just want you to know Hold me now I really want to tell you I'm sorry I could never let you go

My dad died last week and it hit me that THIS would be his song if I had to choose one. We finally said sorry and he made it up in the end. Also, my sister made her peace with him before he went. He was a huge fan of classic rock as a music promoter and I was born in Chicago so this song hits hard these days. Remembering the good times, pops! 🍻🎶 Luv you forever.
