In this week's guitar lesson, you'll learn how to play a Chicago Blues style rhythm and lead by yourself (no jam track needed) on electric guitar. You'll be learning both how to play a shuffle rhythm as well as a call & response.

Active Melody is the best resource to learn, improve or accelerate guitar playing that I’ve come across after many decades of on again, off again lessons. In person lessons are helpful in very specific ways but the ability to watch and repeat any part of a lesson as many times that you wish is invaluable. Brian also teaches a new composition every week which he writes, so you’re always learning something unique. I think I appreciate that aspect of his methods the most. I signed up for another popular online teacher that I found on KZbin, but I quickly cancelled that course after the nearly constant attempts to upsell me a more expensive membership. Brian doesn’t do that, ever. Active Melody is the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

Not enough is said about your tone Brian. This is a great example. I first noticed your choice of guitar in your acoustic lessons is always a perfect match to the style of the lesson. Same here, that tele is awesome.

Just stumbled across your channel. I've been playing guitar for 20+ years but only recently become interested in learning the blues. Ive been trying to get a handle on this style of jam for a little while now. With this lesson I made more progress in 30 mins then I have in the last few weeks. Your style of teaching clicked with me.

Hi Brian. Although I have been a devoted subscriber for many years, it’s been a little while since I have plowed thru your amazing content, as my subscribed channel list has grown to immense proportions and tons of great stuff gets buried. In any event, I just wanted to say that you Sir are a national treasure! Your guitar instructional content is really unmatched. I am amazed at how you continue to come up with such tasty licks and rhythm patterns that I don’t really see elsewhere. But what makes it really stand out is your easy going, concise and approachable delivery that provides a perfect mix of technical theory with practical tips that tie it all together. And on top of that, I love to see and hear your eclectic collection of guitars. Wishing you and all your viewers a HEALTHY and fulfilling New Year. Cheers!

Try playing the 1 4 5 across the neck in triads. That's why I think triads, caged and the pentatonic are so important. Thanks Brian, great lesson

Your blues licks and scale patterns are great. The only mystery to me that is left is the explanation of the scale patterns in the context of the CAGED whole chord shapes. I find in 145 based stuff I tend to use the whole chord shapes and just pick the notes from within the whole shape.

This rhythm is going to take some perseverance. Will get back on the bike though until it clicks but in the meantime gave in and went fingerstyle. Played this half with an extra alternating open 6th string E note. Sounded completely different but it kinda of worked, Delta style. 😮

Took me about half an hour to get the main shuffle rhythm down but as you say once you have it then it sticks. The tricky bit I found wasn't the notes you actually play but the ones that aren't played or are muted.
