How cool is it to see Wrigley Field from the 40's...and to know, one can go to the exact same place today. God bless...the Chicago Cubs, and the Boston Red Sox...for not tearing down their stadiums. Fenway and Wrigley...is sacred ground. And honestly...so is Dodger Stadium. The 3 oldest parks in baseball. The Astrodome in Houston is still standing...but who knows for how long. A shame...money and greed are more important than sacredness. Hopefully these parks will never be destroyed. It is so sad to see Old Yankee Stadium gone. Ebbets Field, and the Polo Grounds. All gone. What a shame.

I saw a game at old Tigers stadium in the late 80s. Such a cool place. Where the Tigers now play is generic, dull, and lacks character.

This film can't be from anywhere earlier than 1943. Cubbies wore sleeveless unis from 1940-42. 😷

Agree. Uniforms look right. The ceremony at home plate. It all adds up.

I agree that #6 is Stan Hack. The only other #6 to play third base for the Cubs in the 1940s was Frankie Gustine in 1949 (55 games). Hack wore #6 for the Cubs from 1937 - 1942 and 1945 - 1947. I don't know what's unique about the 1947 Cubs uniform compared to the 1946 uniform. We need not look past 1947 because that was Hack's final year with the club. And we probably need look no earlier than 1946 because no Cub wore #46 in 1945, and Hack was not in baseball from 1943-1944. #43 is OF Bill Nicolson. #46 is OF Dom Dallessandro. #47 is OF/3B Peanuts Lowrey. (who further limits our years to nothing prior to 1943) If it's 1947, #23 (top, 0:41) is then Doyle Lade. If it's 1946, then #23 is Vern Olsen OR if that's a 25 on the uniform, that's Hi Bithorn in 1946. If it's 1946 #35 is OF/AB Marv Rickert. If it's 1947 #35 is either OF/1B Marv Rickert or P Ralph Hamner. The Hamner played in far fewer games in 1947 (3 in September), and the former played in 1946 and 1947. And, based on the blue of away uniforms, I believe they're playing either Brooklyn or Pittsburgh. If it's 1947, Pittsburgh was the only of the two teams to carry a catcher wearing #1. Therefore the Cubs are hosting Pittsburgh, and that's Dixie Howell. Dixie Howell played 7 games at Wrigley Field that year. 26 June 27 June 28 June (both games of a double header) 29 June 6 August 7 August However, if it's 1946, it's still Pittsburgh, and wearing #1 at catcher is Bill Salkeld. So the gameday is either 28 June or 31 August of 1946. I feel we've narrowed the gameday to 9 games on 8 days. I'm very curious what the unusual pre-game gathering behind home plate is. Perhaps there's something in the Tribune, Sun, or Daily Times descriptions of those games to clue us into the purpose of that gathering/ceremony.

I can smell the grass, and feel the warmth in the air. I can hear the crowds cheer, how I wish I was there. Music is playing though you cannot hear, such a wonderful tune.Take me out to the ballgame, take me out with the crowd, By me some peanuts and cracker jacks, I dont care if we never get back, So lets root root root for the home team, if they dont win its a shame and its one two three strikes your out at the old ball game.

Didn't evolve ,change till they put lights in . Looked just like this up to 1986 .fortunate even in the 60's and 70's to experience 1940 baseball

Mario Cisneros but that weather in the daytime prevented them from winning when everybody else went night.

@@davanmani556I thought that too, but after the lights were installed in 1988, the Cubs still continued to be the same old Cubs until finally winning World Series in 2016. They needed the lights because MLB and the TV people would have screwed them everytime they were in postseason. Nevertheless, I still miss all those day games.

@@davanmani556To me, the day baseball keeping them from winning championships smelled a lot like an excuse, and as a lifelong Cub fan I've heard plenty of excuses. We'll never know for sure the effect of the day games, but for most seasons they just weren't any good, whether playing in the day or at night.
