I love Chicago and this is among my favorites of theirs. The production and arrangements on their recordings from this phase of their career also really sets them apart. So warm and lively, plenty of air. And yet, so clean. This was the golden age of rock recording. And the writing; they were so creative and prolific during these years too. They were an active volcano. And they *never* phoned it in back then.

Glad you listened to this. This has always been my favorite Chicago Song. It's so brilliantly arranged. The rhythm section building one instrument at a time. And then after the dialogue begins the horns just rap around it. I think everything they do best just blossomed in this song. Great choice.

As a long time Chicago fan, I've always thought this was their masterpiece. Those intricate horn parts arranged by Jimmy, that crazy good rhythm guitar from Terry, that great vocal dialogue between Terry and Pete and Bobby's great lyrics. Chicago took a strong anti-war stance during the Viet Nam war, and they would run voter registration drives at their concerts. I think there's something here for everyone.

For me, Chicago was over after Terry Kath died. The rock & blues aspect of the band was greatly diminished. Last Christmas my son gave me an original vinyl pressing of Chicago V. It still had the large poster and all the individual band member photo's in it and is in like new condition. I guess he remembered me telling him how I'd had this album back in the 70's and stupidly traded or sold it at some point and was lamenting the fact. I couldn't believe it. I have an awesome son. He's 32, but got my musical taste and loves the Beatles and Zeppelin and other Classic bands along with some newer stuff. Great reaction Nick!

You said 1972. But I clearly remember wearing this out on my turntable in my college dorm room as a freshman - 1968. Their music blew me away. It was so different and fresh at a time when there was so much great music happening. But I can't separate this song from the times: the Vietnam War was raging and the country was in great turmoil, especially college campuses. There were radicals, hippies, ROTC conservatives, and everything in between. We had "bull sessions" in our rooms about the war and everything else, and they could sound much like this song. I was a naive little 18 year old, but this song perfectly captured the spirit of the moment. We had very little actual visual imagery or factual reporting from Vietnam, yet what we could see on tv was devastating and divisive. Now 56 years later, we have so many images and reporting of wars in Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine, flooding the internet daily. Seems we haven't learned or changed.

There have been several personnel changes over the years and only 3 original members remain in the band. But now that you've heard this song, you should should hear the live version of this on drummer Walfredo Reyes, Jr.'s, KZbin channel. The video is from the drum cam and the audio is the soundboard feed into the earpiece. The audio is amazing and the band sounds fantastic!! There are many live videos that he has posted of the band. Back then, there were 2 major bands that included a horn section. Blood, Sweat and Tears and Chicago. But while BST had a more pop oriented style, Chicago was a very experimental band, trying out a lot of different stuff on their first albums. And boy, did they produce ! Their first 3 albums were double albums, then a (I think) 4 record live album. Matter of fact Chicago IV is the first single album. While the horns of course were prominent, they also had the driving force of Terry's guitar, and the amazing Cetera/Seraphin rythm section. And on top of that, Lamm, Kath and Cetera were all great singers. And when you add the fact that they also had great songwriters, you have a recipe that can't fail.

Nick, I don't remember Terry ever playing a wah-wah. Pete did use a wah-wah bass though. Incidentally, you have no reason to apologize for not draggin' a personal geo-political stance onto your page. Folks are here for the music. Okay y'all, let's just face it... if you bought the LP, half-speed master, reel-to-reel, 8-track or cassette then you're most likely on Medicare and drawin' Social Security! We're currently "The Older Generation". Remember, "Never trust anyone over 30"? I wonder what percentage of people under 50 recognize the manufacturers Akai; Alpine; Ampex; AR; Bang & Olufsen, Blaupunkt; Jensen; KOSS; Garrard; Sansui; TEAC or Technics? Inevitably we've become the old grey-haired folks now!!! A very wise and talented man from here in Tennessee once said, "Good music is universal and timeless." I really do feel that American Prog will live on in perpetuity as THE defining genre of the Boomer Generation and Chicago headlines that list.
