I'm a 42 year old white guy and work in Engelwood, and other bad hoods these "gangs" never hassle me, they know I'm not a threat to their business and I respect that it's their neighborhood. I don't agree with what they do but on the other hand it's a different world in there, there's not alot of opportunity for them. It's kind of like third world. I often think about these guys when I'm off work and back home out in Dekalb county, at one point I thought about trying to buy property in Engelwood and build a bmx track for the young kids but I just don't have the funds and the city is a pain in the ass with their hoops to jump through. they need opportunity and mentors and ways to make money, The city should focus on projects that create opportunity for these guys instead of pouring millions into trying to win the Olympics and impressing Amazon. They built a Whole foods and a Starbucks near Engelwood so Rahm Emanual can go on tv and say their trying to cure the food desert, WTF I can't even afford to shop at Whole Foods. These politicians in Illinois are so far out of touch with these neighborhoods, it's a dog and pony show.

Tristan , it doesn't have to be that way. The situation can be fixed, but it requires leadership and guts. First of all, the majority of the people are basically good people. Seems like 95 % of the problems are caused by 5% of the people. The residents of these neighborhoods need to unite under the idea of "We are not going to live in fear of these thugs any longer." They need to get actively involved to rid the cancer that plagues their neighborhoods. Putting their heads together, they can figure out a plan, if they try. I said it will take guts, but their survival depends on it. They probably already know who the bad actors are and where they live. That is a start. Don't break the law, but put a LOT of pressure on them.

sloppy joe , and one of them admits his teacher was right. If he kept himself on the same path, "he would either end up dead, or in jail." Yet he still continues down that path of destruction. He doesn't have enough fire in his belly to get out of there and do something positive and good with his life. He should be inquiring how others in that same situation broke the chains, and enormously improved their lives, for the better. A good example is here is Dr. Ben Carson. As a Black, he grew up in a broken family in inner city Detroit, in public housing. He eventually became a famous and prominent neurological brain surgeon. He had choices. He could have grown up living the urban ghetto lifestyle of crime, drugs, and failure, or, take the path that he chose, instead. He now serves in the White House, as head of the department, "Housing and Urban Development" (HUD). If anyone can understand the issues, he can.

Someone said hope they make it.let me tell you something if you were born in the U.S.A soil that means you have made it period. all you have to do is work hard simple is that. money isn't going to come to you. Mr. Mike , thank God for that. If you are, or will be a parent, pass that favor on to the next generation. The world needs better kids of all races than we are seeing here. Better parents raise better kids.

@@jeromewysocki8809 problem is, the government rewards single parenthood by handing out welfare checks if the father don't live in the same house.

ChuddleBuggy , you are absolutely right. The government is a big part of the problem. This is just one reason why many conservatives want the government to stop messing up our country. Either big government is ignorant, stupid, or that is their plan, to control people to the highest degree, while the corrupt government squanders our hard earned money they extract from us, by high taxes.

Charlie seems to have done so much more revealing than the government ever has. These men should never have to keep checking their backs. Be safe, all! Prayers.
