I knew someone who I went to school with who was an active Latin king. I last saw him when we graduated and the last thing he said to me was “you’re gonna see me on tv one day, stay safe bro I’ll see you” 5 weeks later he was shot in the face and died by a rival gang. Sure enough it was on the morning news. It’s sad, he left behind his girlfriend and his 1 year old boy. It’s very unfortunate he didn’t stop even after having a child, we all just want to live peacefully day by day.

Growing up in California, gang life culture is everywhere and it’s so easy to get wrapped up in it as a child and many of my close friends were involved in that lifestyle and I can 100% say I only didn’t completely go down that path because my parents were around and they were a little strict, they needed to know where I was at and who I was with, if I was staying the night somewhere, they needed to know or meet their parents so I can without a doubt say having parents especially a father in the household is so important. I also was encouraged and loved playing sports so that also helped.

I grew up in the South Bronx in the 70's where gangs were rampant, I saw their mentality, never joined the gang, but had friends who were, I had a vision to get out of poverty and the ghetto, graduated H.S. joined the Army, spent 20 years active service now I'm 100% disabled veteran, I went all the way Infantryman / paratrooper/ Ranger, stay in the gang either get shot/killed or go to prison, they're young now wait until the age, no edcuation no job skills, no social security, have a nephew who were like these thugs, he hung out never went to school, been to prison, convicted Felon, he's 53 years old, still same mentality, on drugs, no job skills a waste of life.

The Latin Kings were founded in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago in 1954 by Ramon Santos as the Imperials, a Puerto Rican progress movement with the goal of overcoming racial discrimination. I was downtown for Riot Fest on Mexican independence day. The traffic was beyond insane, but the amount of people out celebrating their heritage was even crazier. 99% of it was people just playing music, singing, dancing, fireworks, and a general good time. There was hardly any major violence outside the gang centers, it looked incredible to be a part of. Tommy G you gotta go back to Chicago during Puerto Rican celebrations they apparently (according to my friends in the city) go absolutely nuts. I was told they regularly shoot off fireworks from inside their cars, and don't stop partying for like two weeks straight.

My dad grew up in little village until one day he witnessed he best friend get shot up right outside his house and was scared he was gonna die young so he wanted to kill himself and the day he was gonna do it my grandma walked in on him about to shoot himself with a hollow point round and they started crying and she told him they were gonna leave chicago for the better and came down to McAllen Texas where he met my mother who was his next door neighbor and after a few years they had me and my brother's and sister and now my dad lives a great life with us and we occasionally during the summer go to little village where my cousins live and visit them and go to literally all the places you did and a little bit more. As a native Chicagoan, somewhat older at 33 and grew up in north Lawndale “holy city” and south Lawndale “little village” this shit is spot on, the part about not kings not being racist and true and false, it depends on the situation and what’s going on. Had a Latin King come and help roof my crib. He’s still affiliated but said that life is bogus. You think they’re all down for you but when he got locked up nobody was sending him money, his own homies were spreading rumors and almost got him hit in prison. Grew up with a lot of these guys in this video and I used to hang with them daily until I was 14/15. I chose to go to college at Urbana but it is what it is, sometimes when there is blood that’s been shed or you don’t have the positive support system to look ahead and grind for a better life you feel as if you don’t have another choice but to join up. At the end of the day, everyone makes their own choice, life is full of other ways to make it out the system that is entrapping them.

Man I am from rural Appalachia, my mom is a McCoy and my is a Hatfield, we had our fights here and blood feuds are real thing here but eventually we find our peace, there it just seems like they can never just look and say, "ok this has been enough" I served 12 years in the the Marine Corps as a Rifleman and did multiple combat deployments and I know for me it got to a point where I said I have had enough, we all I think come to a point where you are done with the fighting and seeing the loss of life, but for these folks they are generations of fighting and killing, at what point do they feel there has got to be some kind of peace not only for them but the Innocent stuck in the middle. I served so long in wars I grew to hate, there is no glory in it, no one really truly walks away unharmed, I hope these young men and women can eventually come together and find a way to make peace and find the love for their fellow American. Life is to short to be consumed in hate, and revenge.
