I knew someone who I went to school with who was an active Latin king. I last saw him when we graduated and the last thing he said to me was “you’re gonna see me on tv one day, stay safe bro I’ll see you” 5 weeks later he was shot in the face and died by a rival gang. Sure enough it was on the morning news. It’s sad, he left behind his girlfriend and his 1 year old boy. It’s very unfortunate he didn’t stop even after having a child, we all just want to live peacefully day by day.

My dad is a (nearly retired) Chicago cop and he said there were guys throwing gang signs during the Mexican independence parade. He told them “you can do whatever you want, just no gang signs” and they respected him. Nowadays, there’s too much animosity and morals have left the street scene so that would never fly.

Good looks on the guy asking if Tommy G wanted a vest. Goes to show that even gang member have a small part of them that have hearts and sympathy towards others. Most of these thugs are young kids with no guidance and poor discipline. Yes they do terrible shit and deserve the consequences of there actions, but arrested gang members doesn’t get to the root of the problem that creates systematic gang violence. It starts in the home, support system, education, communication, and opportunities for the non privileged. Love from Italia 🇮🇹

Growing up in California, gang life culture is everywhere and it’s so easy to get wrapped up in it as a child and many of my close friends were involved in that lifestyle and I can 100% say I only didn’t completely go down that path because my parents were around and they were a little strict, they needed to know where I was at and who I was with, if I was staying the night somewhere, they needed to know or meet their parents so I can without a doubt say having parents especially a father in the household is so important. I also was encouraged and loved playing sports so that also helped.

I appreciate Tommy coming out and getting these stories told by the people. It’s also crazy as someone who doesn’t even mess with the gang life has to deal with it all since I’ve been living here since I was born. Tommy’s instinct about having to get the hell out of the Little Village is something I constantly have to deal.

As a native Chicagoan, somewhat older at 33 and grew up in north Lawndale “holy city” and south Lawndale “little village” this shit is spot on, the part about not kings not being racist and true and false, it depends on the situation and what’s going on. I went to Farragut high school in little village and was cool AF with a few Latin Kings and I’m black‼️ I’ve been on 26th shopping hella times and never had a problem, if you obviously not banging and bringing trouble, you come though on 26th and it’s all love💯

But as far as getting robbed, you don’t run a business on the side of the street in a “hood” “favela” “barrio” and expect not to be robbed at some point. Regardless of what “race” the gangster is. They run from their country to escape violence and poverty just to come to another dangerous country with violence and poverty. The violence is just less extreme in most states here as it can get in central and South America. But being racist towards your other people because of a language/culture barrier won’t help.

I was downtown for Riot Fest on Mexican independence day. The traffic was beyond insane, but the amount of people out celebrating their heritage was even crazier. 99% of it was people just playing music, singing, dancing, fireworks, and a general good time. There was hardly any major violence outside the gang centers, it looked incredible to be a part of. Tommy G you gotta go back to Chicago during Puerto Rican celebrations they apparently (according to my friends in the city) go absolutely nuts. I was told they regularly shoot off fireworks from inside their cars, and don't stop partying for like two weeks straight.
