You know, I’m not a firefighter, but with the fire being at a petrol (gas) station, I think that the crew of engine 106 were correct in taking their time at the start, also CFD were also correct in sending out multiple appliances to what could have become a very serious call out. I’ve saw the CFD at work when I was in Chicago in 2017, and I have nothing but admiration for them. Great catch. 🏴🏴🏴

On the east coast, this is what we would call "light smoke showing". Since the front door works, wedge it open, send your can man and your irons man in to assess (if possible) while the nozzle man pulls the line. If you run with a lighter crew, have the officer pull the line immediately to the door with the irons man, enter and asses, while the engineer raises the RPMs. No need to gut the building. The first ladder company should be doing a primary search, and then overhaul if needed. Not immediately cutting a hole in the roof for no reason.

Truck should be positioned to the rear and all other incoming companies should follow the perimeter you don’t want to place trucks over the tanks in the ground holding fuel. It’s just a precaution even when there’s realistically no chance of having any issues with them. The first due driver definitely seemed like he was confused but with all the space in the perimeter the first engine chose a pretty good spot directly on the hydrant to be able to feed line or other engines. If anything he should’ve not been so close to the hydrant to kink the line.

No, that's an absolutely preposterous idea... You European firefighters are very nationalistic and proud about how you fight fires. Good for you, except this isn't the UK/Ireland. This is the United States, a country that actually sees a lot of fires per year, and E106 is no stranger to fires. Based off the videos I've seen, the CFD doesn't play around when it comes to fires, so expect there to be a reason they came so under prepared. The line stretching was not excusable however given the general conditions inside they were most likely still trying to figure out if even using the crosslay was necessary, it seems after a few minutes they went with it anyway. @chiefrich18044 жыл бұрын
@@warren6891 How do you know it was a small fire, did you crawl in there. Looks can be deceiving. In 1966 a young FDNY Lt. by the name of Vinny Dunn was call to a fire in art supply store in Mid-town Manhatten. When his company arrived (E33) he was told to go around back to check a store behind the art supply store call wonder drug. Anyways, when he came upon wonder drug all he saw was light smoke, "nothing really there" as he said, so him and his company went elsewhere. Minutes later the crew of engine 18 went into the back of wonder drug with 4 members of ladder 7, Deputy Chief Thomas Reilly, and Batt. Chief Walter Higgins. They thought that they could knock out the back wall to the drug store to access the fire. It was not less than 5 minutes after they all went into the back of the drug store, that the heavy marble floor they were standing on gave way into the basement of the art supply store, who pushed there basement wall back farther under wonder drug. Those 12 firefighters never had a chance of surviving. All these firefighters thought they were dealing with a "small fire" given how little smoke there was. And unfortunately this has happen many times sense then, from Hackensack, NJ, San Francisco, CA, Glouster, MA, to more recently the "Charleston 9", in South Carolina. Firefighters walking into what they though was nothing, only to be incinerated at the drop of a hat. Smart, street wise firefighters can never assume they are dealing with a small fire. Anyways, Vinny Dunn who would retire a Deputy Chief, has spent the last 50 years beating this history lesson in firefighter safety to everyone across the country. And to quote him one last time he will say " We were fooled by the light smoke", because what's troubled chief Dunn all these years was, it could have been him and him company in the back of that drug store. Lastly, windows are a cheap and easy thing to replace. A lot cheaper than having this business reduced to a hole in the ground, because the firefighters did not get a good vent when they had the chance. Also, in a city like Chicago firefighters can afford to be "gentle".

Not for nothing, Most people watching these videos are on the job somewhere and actually do know what we are looking at and talking about. Videos like these are training aides and unfortunately this video has a couple bad takeaways from it and can be used to show how things could be handled differently. At the end of the day the fire went out and nobody got hurt. But when your department causes unnecessary damage regularly those costs reflect right back onto the insurance premiums and it is not uncommon after the fact the City will face litigation from the insurance company when the independent investigator deems the damage by the FD to be uncalled for. Does the line firefighter care about these things, no. But the BC should know when to hold up on taking the roof and all the windows.

Bad traffic control. engines should have a more systematic and organised approach. those first few minutes were crucial to save lives and properties. just sayin...

Thanks for posting. We were out for a walk nearby and heard all the sirens but could not find any news stories on it. I'm curious what the cause was. Anyway nice to see the CFD in action & getting things under control quickly. Small comforts these days count for more than usual.

Your welcome. It was arson from what was reported via the Citizen app. CPD is looking for the individual

@3:08.... that cop walking to the gas station like if he's going to do something instead of directing traffic 😐

3 minutes to charge a line???? in my town of Reading Pa. we have a charged line within a minute of getting off the rig really C.F.D???

This has to have been a training exercise because I have seen VFD's work faster and cause less damage to property.

So slow getting going, having to get firegear on instead of arriving fully dressed. And smashing windows for no reason, the place is open, they are inside, yet they go on smashing windows.
@hihfty4 жыл бұрын
They more then likely were already on the road and didnt have there gear on while driving around. As far as everything else you said, you're correct. Tough to watch.

Wow - Hate to be that guy but this looks like a small town volunteer department. Truly awful. Took an age to go under air and commit with firefighting media for a small fire. Completely unnecessary ventilation of the front windows which would have only served to increase the fire had it been substantial enough. Over resourced.
@123Puke4 жыл бұрын
It wasn't a raging blaze, so I'm guessing the building can be repaired........why did they need to destroy the window frames!? Just break the glass out. It's easily replaced later.
@911chicagofd24 жыл бұрын
Yeah i thought them trying to rip out the frame's was a bit much however the Gas Station has been repaired and is back open
@chiefrich18044 жыл бұрын
These stores use a high impact safety glass, you have to take the frames out in order to take the glass out. If you pay close attention to the video, firefighters were wacking that glass hard, but they would not break until after they pulled the framing off.
@donaldhgarrett67194 жыл бұрын
Breaking one window, opening front and back doors would have been sufficient for ventilation. I've worked house fires with less and more flame showing than that business had. It took over 6 minutes to put water on the fire. Despicable.

Look purely like a typical can fire that was transferred into a 3 alarm calamity. Does this happen often in Chicago. There were enough staff present before they entered and did anything meaningful they could havr all entered and stomped it out with foreman's boots and forgot the water. Oh but send four to the roof to cut a hole and ventilate 4sure. Pretty disgusting I would say.
@briantheminer4 жыл бұрын
Agree Mike, they need to practice donning kit and scba, 4 minutes....And why ventilate the roof of a single story when you have guys controlling it already?

Most likely they were returning to quarters from a run when they got the call. They would never leave quarters without putting on there equipment when they get a call for a fire.

I really hate when they break out every window and cut holes in the roof. I think the two doors left open was enough for venting. All the merch is ruined from water. They must of pulled the ceiling down? I didn't see any flames.
@306cuber4 жыл бұрын
Boy, that seems like quite the excessive response for such a small fire but I guess I'd rather have that than just a guy show up with a fire extinguisher.

Love Cfd but come on guys looking small in the beginning getting dressed on scene units showing up with doors open roof ventilation w no helmets I always will respect the game just keep ur helmets on when you play
@rcor874 жыл бұрын
I do not believe 106 was coming from quarters, hence getting dressed on scene. Doors open, I assume you mean 56, if you watch more closely, they pull up, camera changes view, they then reposition the rig. So probably opened the door before repositioning. Not everything that happens can be seen or answered by one video.
