@RobinSpielberger10 жыл бұрын
Except this video is wrong. It isn't using the current version of CMS - the 16th. The heading style is completely wrong. Level 1 heading style of CMA in the 16th edition is Centered, Boldface, and Title Style or Headline Style Capitalization - meaning you use Uppercase letters for all words in a Level 1 Heading except this words like "and," "to," or "but".
@denisewalsh153010 жыл бұрын
Robin Spielberger Hi Robin, thanks so much for the correction. So every letter in a level 1 headline is capitalized, centered and bold faced. Are subtitles (I think they are called level 2 headings) left aligned and only the first letter of each word capitalized in the 16th version or are they follow the same format as level 1 headings?
@RobinSpielberger10 жыл бұрын
Denise Walsh The first letter of each word in a Level 1 Heading is capitalized. The entire heading is centered and in a boldface type style. Example: Freedom for a Land Under Siege *(this is all bold and centered)* Now, a Level 2 Heading is centered and the first letter of each word is capitalized just the same as a Level 1 Heading but is NOT boldface. A Level 3 Heading is capitalized just the same way but is NOT centered and not boldface. It starts on the left like any other non-indented sentence. Level 4 Heading starts on the left and only the First letter is capitalized. That is called "sentence case" type. It is also boldface again. Then you do not hit return and add a space after the period at the end of the sentence. You simply continue with the text of your paper. Make sure you "un-bold" the text when you start typing your paper. CMS says that the heading styles are only a suggestion, just as long as you are consistent. I tend to follow their suggestions, except I don't like the Level 4 Heading style. My Level 4 Heading style is as follows: I use Headline style capitalization (where the first letter of each word is capitalized) and I left align my heading. I then, italicize it and hit return providing a small space between it and the text that follows. (Other heading levels are usually double-double spaced - meaning I hit return twice - and this one is single spaced, meaning I only hit return once). I hope I helped. Googling templates for other CMS research papers or for theses and dissertations is a good idea to give you some examples. Beware, not all are correct. If you use an Apple computer, the writing program "Scrivener " is amazing, helpful, and comes with a template. It has a 30 day free trial and you get a solid 30 days of use...which means that if you close the program every time after you use it, you can start it 30 times and that may take longer than 30 days. A great deal. Word is the bane of my existence and I've found that for long research papers (such as the thesis I finished last semester - 110 pages) using any other program is better. Word gets bogged down and starts to seriously lag. For research papers, you don't need all the creative functions that word offers...you need a simple typesetting program. "Mellel" is another great program for this but there is a serious learning curve and I didn't have time to switch and study a new program. Finally, a citation entering program that is worthwhile is called Zotero. Free and downloadable. Almost always right - more so than any of the other thousand that I've used. Good Luck!!

Yes, but if that bothers you there is a way to change it. You can go to the button you click to insert the page number, and at the bottom of that menu you should click on "Format page numbers..." From there, you will be able to choose what number your page numbers start with.

What edition of CMOS is this again? Because I checked out other Chicago style tutorials and I noticed some differences, like the footnote number should be normal size, not raised, followed by a period in the endnote; the title in the title page should be ALL CAPS; and the first page number should be "1" not "2". This confuses me a little.

On the bottom of the 1st page of the essay there is a line "shortened time by 20 minutes" why is this in inverted commas, and why is it not referenced? Also, do you have any more info, links etc on rules about in-text citations that don't require inverted commas, as opposed to quotations which do? How does a reader know when what you are referencing begins if it is not in quotation marks?

Technically, the majority of your paper should be from you rather than your book, and you should use the book to support your writing. But yes, you will need to use a footnote every time you put information from the book whether it's a direct quote or put into your own words. When you use the same source, you only put all of the citation info in the first footnote. The remaining footnotes can just contain the author's last name and the relevant page number. Does that answer your question?
