Its mind blowing that such sophisticated music could be produced not by seasoned artists but by young men in their mid twenties. Even my parents dug these guys.

A great Robert Lamm composition and vocal, to say nothing of the piano intro. But the brass arrangements on this are first rate. And 'In the Country' which is the next tune, is even better, in my opinion. It is a Terry Kath showcase.

Please. Enough already about Terry Kath. Yes, he was an excellent rock guitar player. But this idea that he was the greatest to ever play the guitar is an absurdity.

It's one of my favorite Chicago songs. If you come to "Make Me Smile" ... please, please listen to the whole cycle of "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" in one go. These are the songs "Make Me Smile", "So Much To Say, So Much To Give", "Anxiety's Moment", "West Virginia Fantasies", "Color My World", "To Be Free" and "Now More Than Ever." That looks like a lot now, but individually they are all very short songs that together form the "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon".

One of their best. Robert wrote so many songs, including the horn arrangements (for the first 10 years, anyway), but was always generous giving his songs for others to sing. Pankow, too.

Unfortunately Chicago was pretty much the last group to have their own brass section as members of the band, rather than hire some studio guys for a specific cut.

This is such a beautiful song by Chicago. I always wonder why it is not much better known, especially since its nature should please both the fans of the earlier songs and those of the later, somewhat shallower songs.

My brother was it 7 or 9 consecutive #1 albums on the billboard album hot 200! All in a row! Clive Davis was the CEO at Columbia and put his rep on the line to get these guys on vinyl. He got paid, they got paid, we all got paid with 50 years of great music! Had some older friends drafted into the Viet Nam war that completely wore out and stretched out an 8-track of Chicago Transit Authority! Straight up real life Americana!!!

I have been enjoying all of your reviews of the classic Chicago songs and I can't wait for the next track "In The Country". It is one of my favorites from this album, and was written by the legendary Terry Kath. A fantastic closing of side 1 of disc 1 of their second double-LP in a row. I won't spoil it for you, but I believe you will both enjoy it a LOT!

Side One of this double-vinyl album usually does not receive much attention. In Chicago's salad days, Robert Lamm was the group's most political songwriter, and "Poem For the People" is one of his under appreciated protest songs.

I dont know if you can understand what it was like to hear this music when it first came out it was so different to most of what was going round mixing rock/jazz/soul/even funk there where a few bands Blood Sweat and Tears an English band called If an of course Zappa doing his thing but the first three albums (all dbl albums) where just a force to this day i still am influenced in my own music making by those first three albums after Terry died and by the time they got to number 4 and though it has some great tracks Dialogue fantastic but after Terry died for me i lost interest in them Peter seemed to dominate the vocals and they for me got to pop there is a fantastic live show on google at Tanglewood (think its spelt that way) has a brilliant performance of 25 or 6 to 4 that shows just how brilliant a guitarist Terry was There is supposed to be an interview with Hendrix (havnt seen it myself so please no thought police hammering me) where Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist an he said dont know ask Terry Kath anyhow i know Hendrix really rated him
