What a wonderfully "haunting" visual of past railroading & old "roads". What a joy to watch! Thank you for sharing!

I remember I'd ride my bike to Techny, desperately looking for ways to spend my summer, and watch the one car 'scoot' stop at the tiny little platform there..

I certainly miss those days of my youth living next to the Penn Central RR / Conrail tracks in Greenfield Indiana east of Indianapolis. I look for footage of trains on former tracks and the Pennsylvania RR train derailment in Dunreith Indiana 1968. I cannot locate anything on KZbin on that accident or footage from my former hometown of Greenfield Indiana. Thank you for sharing these videos of the golden age of rail transportation. They bring back good memories 😊

Thanks for sharing. The music is perfect for an age of by gone railroading. Truly classic Chicago region railroading.

Fantastic! I used to ride the train back in the day to visit my dad. Usually he'd pick me up in Joliet. Sometimes I went all the way to Union Station. Very nice seeing those 707s too. Thanks!

Great compilation/ thank you. I know some of these areas, as my Dad’s family was pure multi-generation Chicago. I especially liked seeing the inside Tower Operators,, lining the switches and signals. Truly old school Railroading!

These are terrific. Can’t believe the Root Street Tower shot! The footage around Noble Street Tower I loved, as we lived in West Town and I saw the last NS train service the flour mill there. The shots looking out of Lake Street Tower were amazing too. That area looks NOTHING like that today. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting this video of Chicago railroading in the 70s! The vertical lift bridge is still in operation as of 9/1/24. Dearborn station is long gone, torn down in the early 70s and so is the complex track work which that carried many passenger trains into it. Chinatown now occupies the area now. So sad to see it all gone.😢

we would get to chicago a couple times or so a year during the early/mid 70's and much of this video is exactly how I remember it being, either hot and gloomy or cold and gloomy.

Nice! Some incredible shots of long lost railroads and equipment. I never knew that bridge (is it the one which Amtrak still uses to cross the Mississippi River?) cranks straight up and down.
@johniwanski45142 ай бұрын
That bridge I believe you are talking about is the 21st Street Bridge over the Chicago River. South of Union Station, and on the north end of the 21st Street interlocking.

Also just realized that the shots around 21:05 that say Forest Hill/75th Street is actually Englewood Junction and Englewood Union Station. I had to stop and pause it several times to see the station there as the Rock Island commuter train crossed the former PRR tracks. Englewood tower is still there, which obviously long outlasted the station. Crazy to think this is now a flyover, and Manor Park Yard occupies all this space.

I have a feeling that if you time traveled to this time and said that railroads will still be active and important in 2024, someone will either laugh, or say,"don't do that, don't give me hope".
