Chicago's Riverwalk is one of the most beautiful places to be found in any big city around the world. The city has taken a sluggish, formerly utilitarian, industrial waterway and transformed it over the last two decades into the dazzling amenity you see in this video, a wonderful place to linger, excellently landscaped in the shadow of spectacular architecture. Chicago at last values its river as much as its great lakefront. Though it's a city beset by severe problems, it's also a great city. When I was growing up, it was called The Second City, and though it's now the third it's still great. One thing it has in common with New York, its foremost rival as the ultimate American metropolis, is that it embodies the best and the worst in city life. We get plenty of news about the latter. Watching this video is a reminder that despite on going accounts of municipal corruption, crime, socio-economic conflict and urban blight, there is beauty, progress, and an abiding pride in what this still fascinating city has to offer.
