Chicago's best kept secret! Miyama Ryu combat jujitsu's Diane Wallander Shihan

Konnichiwa! In this week's episode, we travel to Chicago, Illinois to link up with Miyama Ryu Combat Jujutsu practitioner and all-around bad ass Diane Wallander Shihan. Don't let her peaceful demeanor for you. This woman is pure dynamite! One could say Chicago best kept secret. We hope you enjoy!
Her new dojo will be opening up at 1835 Dixie Highway Flossmoor Illinois. The dojo's name is Chicago Minami dojo. Minami is a Japanese word for the southside.
More on Diane Wallander, Shihan: Diane's love for martial arts encompasses the training, discipline, striving towards perfection, and life-enriching connections with fellow martial artists. Shihan Diane currently heads the JuJutsu and Hapkido programs at College of DuPage in
Glen Ellyn, IL, specializing in proactive self-defense for girls and women. She is ranked 8th Dan in Miyama Ryu juJutsu, 3rd Dan in Traditional Korean Hapkido and 2nd Dan in WTF TaeKwonDo; she also holds masters and doctoral degrees in Biological Anthropology from Northwestern University. Her extensive background and expertise in the study of animal behavior has led her to a deep understanding of the patterns of aggressive behaviors in humans, which is integrated into her teaching of self-defense.

It was great to see my classmate at the Northwestern University Martial Arts Institute being featured in this video. Diane is a letter prefect practitioner of Miyama Ryu JuJutsu and never fails to be intense. Forty years later she looks as good as she did in 1983 in Evanston. Major Lewis would be proud of you. Congratulations.

@@TonyqTNT Oh, I know what it is. The question was, "Why?". There is no Kiai in traditional Japanese Ko-Ryu, and in a modern context of "combatives", the last thing that you would ever want is for bystanders to perceive is you screaming like an aggressive psycho who started a fight. The only things you want bystanders to hear you saying in a fight is "Somebody call the cops", "Leave me alone", or "Somebody help me".

@baldieman64 that makes complete sense in the context of that you were aware of the attack. However, then the question would be: If you were already utilizing good situational awareness while transitioning safe spaces. Then why did the attack even happen in the first place? In this example the person being attacked was caught unaware. The attacker may have been a spouse or someone the individual was in a domestic relationship with. the Kiai takes on two purposes. One , like with our modern military, it helps one to Focus their mind and energy. 2nd also helps to alert potential witnesses to the situation. but in truth, it happened so quickly. in real life that the whole encounter would last less than five seconds. Respectfully, In traditional Japanese Koryu the only time I have not heard a Kiai is in demonstration. Like with Judo when one performs Nage No Kata. However both arts when being applied in my experience has always utilized the Kiai. With that being said, we appreciate your comment! And thanks for watching!
