I agree wholeheartedly with kids becoming Black Belts, instructors should have some integrity. I child would not be able to defend themselves against an adult Black Belt.

It was great to see my classmate at the Northwestern University Martial Arts Institute being featured in this video. Diane is a letter prefect practitioner of Miyama Ryu JuJutsu and never fails to be intense. Forty years later she looks as good as she did in 1983 in Evanston. Major Lewis would be proud of you. Congratulations.

You got 2 on 1 defense which leaves his other hand free to smash your face. Show legit techniques please
@TheMartialMaze3 ай бұрын
The technique that has been displayed is legit and has been battle tested on more than one occasion. The name of the technique is called Sankyo you may think you would be able to punch with the other hand, but if you were trying to attempted it you would break your own arm. Thank you again for commenting
@dk75413 ай бұрын
Yeah, I bet if that was in action, you'd be pulled to the ground before you could raise your hands up. You be legit slammed to the ground. And if it's a male. He's gonna over power you. And that's facts
@TheMartialMaze2 ай бұрын
I would like to know is when did you attack a woman from behind by pulling her hair to know that the technique would not work?…. folks like yourself keep confusing self-defense for fighting. The two completely separate things. However, with that being said, you’re more than welcome to come to my school for a free demonstration on the effectiveness of Sankyo

Kiai
@baldieman643 ай бұрын
@@TonyqTNT Oh, I know what it is. The question was, "Why?". There is no Kiai in traditional Japanese Ko-Ryu, and in a modern context of "combatives", the last thing that you would ever want is for bystanders to perceive is you screaming like an aggressive psycho who started a fight. The only things you want bystanders to hear you saying in a fight is "Somebody call the cops", "Leave me alone", or "Somebody help me".
@TheMartialMaze3 ай бұрын
@baldieman64 that makes complete sense in the context of that you were aware of the attack. However, then the question would be: If you were already utilizing good situational awareness while transitioning safe spaces. Then why did the attack even happen in the first place? In this example the person being attacked was caught unaware. The attacker may have been a spouse or someone the individual was in a domestic relationship with. the Kiai takes on two purposes. One , like with our modern military, it helps one to Focus their mind and energy. 2nd also helps to alert potential witnesses to the situation. but in truth, it happened so quickly. in real life that the whole encounter would last less than five seconds. Respectfully, In traditional Japanese Koryu the only time I have not heard a Kiai is in demonstration. Like with Judo when one performs Nage No Kata. However both arts when being applied in my experience has always utilized the Kiai. With that being said, we appreciate your comment! And thanks for watching!

I have not trained in martial arts since I was a preteen. However, I believe that the insight that was shared in this podcast is profoundly transferable to anyone who takes their profession and field of study seriously. I appreciated right in the beginning it was stated that the discussion was not about tearing down any individual or their achievements and it wasn't labeled as such for click bait. I respect the fact Sensi White (master marital artist and a professional actor) was only a point reference 👍🏾. The more important focus was on the purposeful usage of the art in its proper context. The analogies that Sensi Randy B. Haskins used were very insightful. He is a top tier professional at explaining and teaching the science behind his craft. His stated phrase "the context will determine the concept" put everything in perspective for me. His analysis regarding acquiring tools (techniques) and having a variety of various tools (skills) and being useless was major. He drove home the point of proper application of the arts when he discussed the fact that high level practitioners bodies have been destroyed from improper usage of techniques. That emphasized the importance of understanding and knowledge of your body. Which related to me as being intelligent and competent in your profession and craft. I appreciated the question regarding students with certain injuries/mobility issues. That was a very important question because people may have certain limitations. And the answer is one I especially appreciated because it dealt with with a critical core value that i truly believe in which is integrity. "This is not for everybody" it's not about the money. There is physical loyalty, respectability, and honesty. I also appreciated the Olympics analogy in regards to preparing for tournaments.

I live on the east coast of Canada and study the history of M.A along with being a student / instructor for 47 years. I saw the original “way of the warrior” VHS tape way back in the late 80s and found not only everyone in the video fantastic and inspiring I enjoyed Mr. Powell Philosophy on fighting especially when he says he has seen “people do fantastic demos, bend swords, or spears on their throats but can they actually fight” I still use that comment to this day when teaching my students. So as a white guy from the east coast of Canada his Philosophy still resonates with me today, even though I’ve never trained before.
