There is no better low brass in any orchestra at any time since 1962. They were - and still are - astounding players.

I agree. Before that time the New York Philharmonic with William Vacchiano was amazing. I was in the NYC all city orchestra in 1983. We did a joint concert with the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta conducting. Once in a lifetime. Phil Smith coached us. He is the one who told me about Wynton Marsalis. It was Phil Smith, John Ware, Vince Penzarella and Carmine Fornarato in the Trumpet section.

I was here at this landmark concert, celebrating the ultimate retirement of Adolph Herseth as principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony, and I believe this concert happened in 2001. I say "ultimate" because once Bud passed year 50 as principal trumpet in 1997, there were many tribute concerts in his honor at Orchestra Hall besides this one. One thing I'll always remember, besides Jay Friedman's impressive arrangement of the Alpine Symphony, was the bright green sport coat Bud wore for the occasion, looking as if he'd just won the Masters!

I was a total amateur playing euphonium in John Paynter's North Shore Concert Band of Wilmette when I was asked to be in an impromptu brass group for an Easter service on Chicago's West side in the mid-70's. As we gathered , who should walk in as the first trumpet but Herseth himself! I was in awe, and yes, it's true- he tuned himself to be just a minute bit sharp, which a couple of students had told me he used to do to better carry his sound over the Orchestra. it''s been 50 years, and I still remember that gig!

I believe it was his first job after graduating Juillard. Don't recall how many years he was there before auditioning and winning the NY job? I also don't know what chair he sat in CSO but recall when the CSO was visiting NY and playing Carnegie the brass section played a similar concert in Lincoln Center and many went to hear and see Herseth but were disappointed he wasn't there and Smith played 1st mostly. Late 1970's early 80's?
