Peter Cetera and David Foster wrote this song for Kenny Rogers. When Rogers didn't record it, they rewrote it a bit and recorded it for Chicago.

That’s interesting. Did Kenny turn it down? If so, I wonder why. 🤔

@@debbiechang5781 According to Wikipedia Peter Cetera stated in a 2004 interview that "You're the Inspiration" started out as a song for Kenny Rogers: "David Foster called me up and he said, ‘I’m in the studio with Kenny Rogers, and he would like you to write a song for him.’ And I said, ‘That’s great! As a matter of fact, I’m leaving for Italy...’ I was going to Europe for something. I don’t remember [why]...and this was like nine o’clock in the morning. I said, ‘I’m leaving for Italy tonight around five o’clock. I’ll be there about two weeks, and I’ll call you when I come back.’ And he goes, ‘No, no, no, he means, like, now.’ (....) And so David was in the studio...and of course...you know, last minute. And so I said, ‘Alright, well you come over here right now, and we’ll see what we can do.’ So in the midst of packing, David drove out to where I was then living. And we basically, in about three hours, came up with a little chordal structure for “You’re the Inspiration,” which it wasn’t called that at the time. And we sort of made this little tape of this chord structure; I took it on the plane, [and] went to Italy. And, of course, lying in these beautiful baroque and marble rooms, and singing out the window...I was writing things about, ‘Michelangelo you should know, Michelangelo.’ And I came up with, oh...you’re the inspiration! [So, I] came back with the words, worked on this melody, and came back and presented the song. And [Kenny] basically didn’t have the time or didn’t want to do it. Good for me!"

When David Foster came in, the sound of Chicago changed a lot ! Of course Pete Cetera's voice was dominating the sound of Chicago at this time around 1980. Really catchy songs, but still great in quality and of course really successful, looking at the chart positions then.

This was from Chicago 17, 1984. Peter Cetera and David Foster wrote this song for Kenny Rogers but he turned it down. David produced the album. David had made some adjustments to their songs to try and reach a different audience which was unpopular with the horn players as the songs didn't require as much horns as their usual songs. Beautiful vocals by Peter, outstanding melody and beautiful instrumentation made for a big hit. Loved your reaction Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Great 80's ballad by Chicago. The 80's was a sort of rebirth for Chicago. Music tastes had changed from how it was in the 70's and a lot of 70's bands/acts had to change with the times or call it a day. Chicago, like kool and the gang, Cameo and Genesis adapted their sound and in the process, hit big commercially. They lost some die hard fans but in the process, gained new ones also.

I'm one of the biggest Chicago fans ever. Love them so much, have been to many concerts and I own every album they've ever put out. That being said, you folks need to do a search for Leonid & Friends and listen to their You're The Inspiration. They are the ultimate tribute band and if you know Chicago like I do, you'll see that they play the song note for note. Since all of the original Chicago guys (inlcuding me) are old dudes now, Leonid & Friends are a re-birth of Chicago. Catch one of their concerts. You won't be disappointed.

Peter Cetera has an amazing voice for sure - but Chicago was a shell of their former selves when this song came out - because of David Foster. Regardless, love your reactions Harri! Can't deny the power of Peter's voice, though I think it was better showcased on Chicago's earlier stuff, like "Dialogue".

Harri, I dropped this note on your video with Tevian(?) reacting to Foreigner's "I Want Know What Love Is" Check out Jason Scheff with Chicago on lead vocals, with Bill Champlin throwing in some vocal phrases here and there. "WIll You Still Love Me?" by Chicago. Look for the extended version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWmTlIKPh5aCrrs It's off the Chicago 18 album. Also, check out 'Hard Habit To Break' with Peter Cetera and Bill Champlin (Chicago 17) -- just like "You're The Inspiration" -- same album and release year. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZKmco2EmLmJm9E
