Fun firearms fact: the Thompson submachine gun is one of the only weapons in which the civilian version is vastly superior to the military version, this is due to the military needing to cut a lot of corners to make it viable for mass production. Even then, it was an incredibly expensive weapon, during WW2 1 military version Thompson submachine gun was the equivalent to 10 British Stens in terms of production time and cost.

It's not the only example of civilian weapons being superior. Sniper systems up until very modern times often came from civilian precision rifles just made to a military spec. Excluding full auto capabilities, civilian semi auto rifles are often superior to their military counterparts at the same price point (ie a modern, free floated, mid tier AR-15 is superior to almost all of the M4 variants)

Lots of WW1 weapons used in the 1920s. Many prior to that actually. Webleys, steyr pistols, early J. Browning pistols, shotguns from the late 19th century etc. Sometimes they’d even roll up a Maxim on a truck and hose down “da opps” 😂 Tommy guns were used a lot as well.

I think the Tommy gun was a revolutionary weapon for its time and became the trademark weapon that the Americans and the mafia used.
