Illegal immigration is a no-no. Stop conflating the two. If people want to immigrate here, they need to do it legally. I agree that more asylum judges are needed because too many people are making bogus asylum claims at the border to get it in. Hey TYT, Derek here, local Chicagoan. These are valid criticisms of the Johnson administration, specifically because of all his rhetoric to help the local community while, seemingly, prioritizing resources to migrant non-citizens. Further, he is trying to push though the “Bring Chicago Home” ordinance which aims to raise transfer taxes on ALL PROPERTIES (residential, multifamily and commercial) that are valued at over $1 million to address homelessness in Chicago, but providing no plan on how these funds will actually be used, likely diverting them to address migrants and further pushing aside our local citizens. It’s also dishonest that his administration is calling this ordinance a “Mansion Tax”, but it does not just tax high value, single-family residences, but all properties over $1mm, including apartment buildings, which will cause rent increases on the consumer, which will likely increase homelessness. Especially because the city still has untapped COVID funds for these purposes. This is already a failing administration where Johnson is more concerned about optics than solutions. Happy to elaborate further if you call me. I’m a licensed broker, appraiser and active in the local landscape.

@@sarbantz I'm sorry, but how does prioritizing non-citizens over citizens, who are suffering as harshly, if not more harshly, instill any sense of confidence in a governing administration? All those resources you mentioned, in my opinion, should be prioritized towards our home-stock who offer more to our local community than foreigners who are now competing for those same resources. I also find it appalling that an actual suggestion you gave was to place people in graveyards and under bridges, these are people not animals, and that goes for both citizens and non-citizens. I, as a Chicagoan who has spent a considerable amount of his professional career actually working in the affordable housing sector, can take anyone through the gamut of how difficult this landscape is and it breaks my heart to see the scarce housing resources going towards non-citizens, during a housing crisis. If the Johnson, or any administration, wanted to actually address this problem they would work towards increasing housing vouchers. Chicago only has ~47,000 for a city of ~3,000,000, which is a HUGE shortage. The Biden administration has only authorized ~100,000 new vouchers, NATIONWIDE, since taking office, which is pathetic, as the estimated affordable housing shortage nation-wide is ~7,200,000 units. Additionally, we need to build and revitalize more housing which is not helped with our current Zoning laws, Building Codes and Financing regulations. These are all failures of regulation, AKA, government. It is 100% the fault of the government that there is a housing shortage and the current migrant crisis, NATIONWIDE, not only in Chicago. Edit for grammar.

The problem is when one of the two political parties has been conditioned to think immigration policy needs to be cruel to be effective, the result is if anything constructive is done to actually address the problem, that is perceived to be weak and politically toxic. Today's GOP loves the status quo where big business has an exploitable pool of labor they can exploit to maximize their profits. That is why there are no real consequences for hiring the undocumented. So that is why they come. Then in election years, they whine about the undocumented being here, and the racist GOP turns out in droves. And the cycle of doing nothing to actually address immigration continues--which is exactly what the GOP and corporate Dems actually want.

Chicago is an amazing place but like many places struggles with its share of disorganization, corruption and greed. They are a sanctuary city. A huge city with lots of resources and if the federal government has spent over a billion dollars then they are getting money to help. It’s not up to California, Texas, and Arizona to shoulder all the burden. I hear peoples anger with the school closures. Schools anchor communities. Chicago has spent millions on out of state contractors “assessing” the situation instead of educating kids. There are currently over 150 high schools in the city of Chicago. They have closed so many over the years due to lack of enrollment and crumbling buildings and a few kids get merged into higher performing schools but much of the time they lump together underperforming schools and some families just scatter and don’t go to the assigned school placing students with relatives in other areas or try to move. The history of that is painful for residents and taxpayers and then pile immigration on top of that. My brother works for the Red Cross and has met some of those busses. People are hungry, terrified, traumatized lots of moms and kids. They have no idea what’s happening or where they are going next they just hope it doesn’t get worse. They made it out alive and now somebody shoves them on a bus for 30 hours. The immigration system needs to work faster and better but an empty school building has bathrooms, separate spaces, places to feed people. Immigration has been a disaster for so long. So has parts of the massive, top heavy school system It’s all the things at once. We need to keep our heads and hearts working together and keep trying to move forward.

They are a burden in a city thats already expensive where we pay taxes and get zero services back whilst they get our tax dollars and all they do is sit around midtown or elsewhere waiting to deliver food. Ive seen families setting up their home in penn station. Theres a standard here and making no money with no skills applicable here isnt helping any of us its a nuisance.

Chicago is a sanctuary city. Also, if they don't use these public buildings to house the migrants, the city will have to put them in hotels when winter comes around, which likely will make the people filing this lawsuit even more angry.

@deannealbrecht774 Жыл бұрын
Yes, they are. And the minute they seek asylum, get their name down written down, THEY ARE LEGAL. Maybe Republicans should do their job. In 2013, the Senate had 60 votes, but the House refused to send it to the floor and then proceeded to complain that Obama wasn't doing anything about the border. So Obama passed a couple of EOs, and Republicans called him a tyrant. They have no desire to fix anything. Have you ever heard an idea to fix anything from a Republican? They always say they will fix it, and they never say how. They say the government doesn't work and then make sure it doesn't.

The problem is the huge number of migrants and asylum seekers. This is caused by problems beyond our borders and it will only get worse. We need a plan now, and if it isn't found in a bipartisan manner then voters may go for a more extreme candidate eventually.
