CME Sessions: Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band | Live at Chicago Music Exchange

Chicago Music Exchange hosted Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band for a CME session on March 14th 2013. Enjoy watching "King's Highway", one of the 3 songs they performed live during their master class.
Blade was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. The first music he experienced was gospel and songs of praise at the Zion Baptist Church where his father, Brady L. Blade, Sr., has been the pastor for fifty-two years. In elementary school, music appreciation classes were an important part of his development and at age nine, he began playing the violin. Inspired by his older brother, Brady Blade, Jr., who had been the drummer at Zion Baptist Church, Brian shifted his focus to the drums throughout middle and high school.
During high school, while studying with Dorsey Summerfield, Jr., Blade began listening to the music of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Elvin Jones, and Joni Mitchell. By the age of eighteen, Brian moved to New Orleans to attend Loyola University. From 1988 through 1993, he studied and played with most of the master musicians living in New Orleans, including Johnny Vidacovich, Ellis Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Bill Huntington, Mike Pellera, John Mahoney, George French, Germaine Bazzle, David Lee, Jr., Alvin Red Tyler, Tony Dagradi and Harold Battiste.

Also, every member of this band is completely ‘in it’, every solo and conversation between horns has something to say to me, like the solos on kind of blue. There are those moments where everyone wants to be a guitarist, or a saxophonist, or a pianist, or a bassist (at least we tell ourselves that). The moments where you listen to someone who really showcases the beauty of their instrument--its versatility, its power, its very soul. Brian does that, in this performance, and really all the time. He really makes you want to be a drummer. He gives you the breadth, and the depth, of the drums.

Blade is for me the model for playing the drums musically and as an INSTRUMENT. There are many greats in drumming, both past and present, that people can point to, but in my eyes this guy is right up there at the top.

+jordian me I couldn't agree more. I spent a decade studying jazz percussion, and I played with and saw some talented cats, avant garde players who blew my mind. I'm not exaggerating when I say that hearing Brian Blade play changed everything for me. It threw all the notions about playing I had out the window. I almost wish I could go back in time and unlearn all I learned - my education is so conventional, and his playing so original, that I feel like I have a mental roadblock that keeps me from understanding. He honestly deserves a MacArthur Fellowship.

That's a very interesting, insightful and wise point to make and one we should all take note of. Institutions have their place, but the danger is, it can kill creativity, style and individualism. I have met many drummers who wished they never went to a music college/uni and felt their player was better before they did. The problem today is, there isn't the work to go round and so you end up at college as opposed to just getting out there and playing. There really is no substitute for real world playing in tandem with your own practice. Don't get me wrong, there are always the exceptions, Erskine being one of them but hey, he's Erskine :-)!

So chuffed to hear this from someone else Jordian. I saw him years ago with Redman, McBride, and Meldhau and it was a revelation for me. I'm a singer/guitarist whose favorite drummers were Bonham, Copland and Beauford at the time. Then along comes Blade and he instantly became my new favorite drummer. He played drums, to my ear, melodically (apparently he tunes them particularlly?). It was no surprise that he was a songwriter too. I think the young Marsalis kid might be of the same mindset and need to check him out more. Anyways. I couldn't put my finger on it but he's my favorite contemporary jazz drummer to this day.

Blade is so damn amazing. Watching him you see that in this moment this man is grateful to be alive, and there's nothing that's going to stop him from playing the s#!t out of this music with these other musicians. He plays with a kind of ease and wild, expressive energy that's contagious. His musical choices and gestures show how deeply attentive he is to everything going on around him. So so good.

Dr. H I have the opportunity to know Brian, back to the days in Shreveport. We had a theatre at our church that put on musicals. We usually used Brian's older brother Brady, also a great drummer. There's a lot of bad Jazz out there. and it's easy for someone to get that as their first exposure. With rock; you're just exposed all the time, good songs will eventually find you. For Jazz, you have to find them.

@@montanabaker1713 That's a really good point. Jazz and classical have a similar problem, the most popular "best of" jazz stuff you find in stores or on playlists is, to me, VERY conservative and boring. It wasn't until I found jazz like Mingus that I really developed a love for it.

It's not just the least consumed, jazz is only around 1% of the total market. That's factoring in all formats, such as streaming, downloads, physical media, radio play, etc. Plus if you look at the top sellers, many of those are classics from the 50s and 60s, plus a number of crossovers.

This track made me fall in love with Jazz about 5 years back and I i still cant get over it even today
