Not if it says "Do not resuscitate, form on file" - that last bit "... file on record" makes it mandatory to check for said file on record, before resuscitatation ! Yes, the tattoo itself is not legally binding in the sense that it can replace the legal file, but if you see a tattoo that states that there EXIST such a file, you are obligated to check for it ! If you don't, you're in serious trouble, because you KNEW there might be a recorded file, due to the tattoo stating so ! In Scotland, we have an "Opt Out" system for organ donation. So essentially, pretty much everyone over the age of 16 is an organ donor unless they've opted out of the system, have recorded a decision not to donate their organs or their family have stated not to have their organs donated. I believe it's a much better system for situations like this where no family members are present to say whether or not they can use the deceased family member's organs. I personally believe every person should be an organ donor if they can be. I'm an organ donor because at the end of the day, if I die then I'm dead and I would rather my organs go towards saving a life than being wasted.
@kaylizzie78902 жыл бұрын
I feel the same way. I like to think of it as advanced recycling. I’m not using my body after I’m dead so if it can help other people than I’m all for it. I’m also a science donor. So not only will my organs go to people who need them but the rest of me is going to be used for research and teaching. Nothing will go to waste and my funeral will be cheaper.
@suzannekirkwood63922 жыл бұрын
My country is opt in, but even if you have stated you want to be donor if one member of your family disagrees they won't use your organs. I think opt out is better, because you have to make an effort to do that yourself, although for underage children it should still be the parents decision.

Or the case of a father having a stand off with police until his son squeezed his hand because they declared his son brain dead when he wasnt and were about to take him off support. It was found out that that hospital was shady and the son was a match for an organ for one of the directors wives. If you are an organ donor you can guarantee that your going to be lower on the priority list because of the need for organs and if you die they get them. Some healthcare professionals, like paramedics, Ive seen on threads/comments that talk about this and caution people because they've seen instances where the patient could have been saved but upon finding out about organ donation status didn't get it because of who called the shots/how others needed the organs. Most family members also aren't trained to know what care their loved one needs too so they would trust those in charge of their loved ones care explicitly. This is genuinely something that comes up from what I hear where organ donors aren't given the same treatment/same life saving treatments others would if those in charge feel their organs are needed or if its discovered that they are a potential match for anyone who needs a transplant. Also some people feeling guilty if its mentioned how their organs could have saved lives if they had died, its horrible.

That's why I love Chicago Med. It creates all these impossible situations, not only because of the rarity of the diseases (not in this case), but also because of the uniqueness of the patients. How many people do you think will get the words "NOT RESUSCITATE" tattooed on their chest instead of leaving their wishes on a DNR? (I know, otherwise there wouldn't be the ethical dilemma). But also, WHY SOMEONE WOULD SCAR HIS BODY LIKE THAT INSTEAD OF FILLING A DNR? It's crazy.

Okay genuinely wondering: how can a tattoo be legally binding ? Just because it says something on his body in ink doesn’t make it fact, nor how he could feel in that exact moment, doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to be resuscitated. I have a tattoo that says “baby I’m yours” so am i then considered my doctor’s if they happen to read it ? It is a tattoo.
@kaylizzie78902 жыл бұрын
It’s not. You need to file paperwork with your lawyer and your doctor for it to be legally binding.

Quality matters, it’s not life at all cost, so he at least had full brain function befor but if he wakes up chances he won’t and then the loss of his daughter, it should be his choice after all if he was elderly they wouldn’t resuscitate. Doctors make choices all the time.

"If there's an advance directive I'll follow it", yeah and I actually have a flaming skull for a head, I don't think I've ever seen this man abide a DNR, like this is a very different situation but to get DO NOT RESUSITATE that big would've take time and planning and honestly some sort of plan or record of plan for a DNR to be in the works.

Exactly, I'm confused how everyone in the comments is against Dr Manning. He clearly meant what he got tattooed, it's in bold ink across his chest which he paid for and Dr Manning is right he was clearly already suicidal to get the tattoo in the first place but then would have woke up with brain damage, a dead 2 yr old and zero family around him for support which in anyones case would have lead him in into a depressive spiral where he likely would have tried to end his life and hated the hospital for not abiding to his right to decide. I get doctors are there to save lives but it's his life at the end of the day and patients have rights to what happens to their body. I'm glad that Natalie managed to get the hospital to agree to let the patients wishes be heard.

I agree that she's made some decisions that weren't what you'd expect, but in this situation, she's right. If he wakes up, he's gonna be paralysed, he'll have severe brain damage and a dead kid as well as wife from before. In their Hipokrates' oath, they promise to do no harm and by letting the guy go, is doing less harm than getting him to live
@potocatepetl3 жыл бұрын
She didn't decide anything. She let a team of doctors and lawyers, who could judge the situation objectively take the decision. Will on the other hand did want to play God with a patient that even if alive, would have had the most terrible life imaginable. Just to say that he saved his life...

A tattoo can say whatever the hell you want it to, but if there is no DNR order on file then I don't think it shoukd count. There should be concrete, legally binding proof for something this serious.

As I have done multiple first aid courses we are told to continue to give cpr or medication help we are comfortable and confident preform even if there is a tattoo. We need verbal consent to stop performing the help we are giving if the patient is conscious. Love the show tho :)

I haven't watched this show and I always see the comments full of Natalie haters. THIS CLIP MADE ME SEE WHY. She's literally suggesting killing someone so she can get a toddler's organs. The kind of pressure people face to donate their family members' organs is so fucking shady and she's pushing it like ten steps further.

Okay, way I see it…they are both wrong. Natalie’s motivations were just. Her way of going about them (trying to pressure a doctor into letting his patient die, guilt tripping him and then going over his head when for all she knew the man could have been on his way to have the tattoo removed) Will’s motivations were just. But he’s also not looking at the situation any less subjectively than Natalie. He is right to be angry that she went against his decision, but he should have reported to the authorities himself. In a situation like this where you are too close to the matter you need an outsider perspective. And Natalie…honestly, I can’t stand how self righteous she is. I’ve heard a million and in examples of this and her hypocrisy when something similar happens to her. Her problem, so far as I am able to determine, is that she thinks that she is the only one who possibly can be right.

Honestly i can't stand Natalie, self-righteous and hypocritical indeed couldn't connect with her as a character at all however she does have a point about the organs. Putting the mans DNR tattoo aside, his daughter is brain dead... Will's argument about the possibility of the father changing his mind about the DNR after having his daughter makes zero sense. Like yeah that could be the case, but the child in question is dead and the chances that the father wakes up as something other than a vegetable are quite low. Looking at the whole picture i would also be in favor of letting the poor man die if his heart seizes to beat again, it would be the kinder thing to do in my opinion. And i get that medical personal shouldn't tip the scale based on these factors but the drama in this episode is so nonsensical. It would've made more sense if say the daughter was still alive and several other patients urgently needed the organs of the father or something, then the argument would've made sense at least. Now they were just fighting over an already lost battle and a person who if they woke up would likely wish they had died alongside their child instead.

@@reginahay4998 Same, i dislike her character but in this instance Natalie was right. Wills argument made little to no sense, i feel like they should've changed the plotline of this episode for his argument to have any standing. It would've made so much more sense if the child was still alive thus giving a reason not to give up on the dad (in this scenario they would've wanted the dad's organs to be donated ofc) but that's just my opinion.
