Everything else formed around that, the space station environment and all the interactions, just to be this little atmospherics/chemical simulator. So jobs like Atmos Tech, Scientist, and Engineer are some of the most involved in the game. It's definitely more of a gradual feature creep than all of it being intended to be this big giant clusterfuck. A happy accident. Exadv1 made it, he has some interviews.

I collaborated with my fellow botanists to start a Skeleton War a long time ago. I don't remember the server, but I got Skeleton Mutation Toxin in a strange seed, spliced it into a Tomato as well as splicing in Gaseous Contents, and we mass produced Skeleton Gas Tomatos and turned the whole station into Skeletons. The captain burst into Botany after he got hit by one, and threatened to torch the department after destroying all of our tomatoes. We mass produced Bluespace Bananas and Tomatoes and left them on the front desk. The captain showed up and literally set fire to the whole department with a plasma grenade and ordered all the botanists to be arrested after someone took some and threw them at people. I hid in maintenance and flung insults at the captain the whole round. I tried to catch an escape pod and the captain caught me thanks to the AI's efforts to track my escape, and swiftly executed me. Didn't get banned, didn't even get ahelped, because it was just so funny of a subplot during the round that nobody cared.

Even more ironic, the most popular NSFW server has furries and Nymphomaniac as an optional character quark you can choose. A player with that quark on their character will start to occasionally shake, moan, and even hallucinate if they go too long without getting off. This server is also the only one I know of that has fishing in it.

Some one who has somewhat played SS13: Yes, hallucinations only affect you (at least to my knowledge). Basically, you could be being chased by a xenomorph but to everyone else your just running around with no pants on. Alternatively, they could see you as a xenomorph (whiles they are hallucinating), and try to kill you thinking you're a threat...or they aren't hallucinating and are trying to kill you for shits and giggles. Also Sseth wasn't kidding about how ridiculously challenging it is to play: it's confusing, painful to learn how to play and when you do finally learn how to play...the game decided you've had enough for one day and crashes due to the game engine (and probably servers) being more than 18 years old (SS13 released way back in 2003).

It doesnt even offer any sort of unique interactions outside of violence, crafting, repairs, or mixing chemicals and it's so visually simple that they would need a lot of imagination. Safest and most mundane shift i've ever worked though, the wackiest part was seeing the captain running around the station, dragging his "girlfriend", checking up on crew members frequently as if giving her a tour.

My first experience with LSD in SS13 to answer your question regarding hallucinations: AI: "Potential for human harm detected. Botanist Kinney is wildly swinging her chainsaw around in the cantina. The crew is advised to stay clear until security can resolve the situation." What I did not know was that LSD would cause very real seeming hallucinations like the one you saw in this video so I was fighting off a giant space spider, a tiny space dragon and some flesh abomination I didn't even know was in the game. I once saw a pretty epic chase between a group of cultists and the security team lead by the detective. They had a standoff in the church, and just as things got to their climax and the bullets were going to start flying, the singularity that nobody was paying attention to ripped out the wall and killed everyone. Another time, I played a virologist, cobbled together a virulent but not quite deadly disease, released it on the station, destroyed all the evidence, then became the hero for curing the disease and was lauded by everybody. I still remember the giddy feeling of walking around with two needs full of the virus in my pockets, injecting random people who were unconscious or afk. The game's Depth is as complex, or simple, as each server designs it to be. You could go to one server, where medicine and medical is very basic. You get Burn patches for Burns, Poison Patches for Poison, and Healing patches for 'Blunt' Damage, which is basically physical abuse damage. But then go into another server, and you have systems set up to be like real life. You can't just put a bandaid on someone and heal them, you need to actually mix complex real life chemicals into a drink, and then take that drink and put it into either a pill or bandage form, and then apply it for a specific injury, while setting bones, having casts, and mix up one chemical and the patient could suffer very bad side effects that could lead to death. Same with a Job not shown in this video named Engineers. Engineers are usually the people keeping the stations run. Some stations are very basic. You go to the 'Engine', you feed it coal or some other power source, and it runs. If there is no power, eventually the station depowers, doors no longer open as they are electronic and need a crow bar, and life support will eventually fail too. But in another server, Each component of the Station could be it's own thing. Instead of just 'losing power' to have all the effects, it will have the systems actually on the map for people to mess with. So in the first server, you need to lose power, which can take a while, before it messes with the station and server. But this second server, has the systems on the station itself to be messed with, such as the Life Support system, which gives air to the Station, that a Traitor could blow up. Or Complex realistic power systems that you would find in a real like engineering job. Or controls for Gravity that the clown could just come by and turn off for the lols. Each server is different, complex in some areas or not, with their own UI, their own visuals, their own maps/stations, and their own systems and jobs on those stations and so on. There is one server where one of the maps doesn't take place in Space, and instead the Station of a massive ship underwater, and you could end up flooding the station and it the ship can move around the 'world' that it's on. There is another station where it takes place in one massive super sized station, where as most stations are 1 floor expanding up down and left and right on the screen, this one takes that and then layers on top of it with other floors going up and down, with each floor dedicated to different sectors and jobs, like Science, Medical, Engineering, and so on. The game is very diverse in mechanics, visuals, concepts, fun, roleplay, and gameplay. And for such a simple top down sprite visuals, it's a very complex and deep game where you need actual science and engineering degrees to even understand some of the complex system that could be done, but don't need those to actually play, and eventually can learn those things through playing this. Kinda. Maybe. I just mainly play as a Teleporter Scientists. I teleport things using Math to understand our Cordinates in our dimension, and use that knowledge to teleport items I want to me and steal things, like the Captain's personal locker to hack into.

“ERP? SO WITH THAT: People be horny, SS13 is free, it has a LOT of very complex systems (including chemical pH on one server), etc. it’s essentially a dream for people with active imaginations and a few hours to kill. Goes for regular gameplay as well as ERP.

If there's one thing I've learned about furries its that they prefer to ONLY do erotic roleplaying in places its both not conducive to it but also actively unwelcomed lmao

Mandaloregaming made a video about this too, it different since it also shares a bit of story of that game, kinda like Fredrick Knudsen

"How does sseth find all these obscure games" Well, if you like games like these it's more that they find you. I have no Idea how I first came upon DF, SS13, CDDA, Aurora4x and such. If you're into it, you'll come across it. If you want to watch a few rounds of SS13 in motion, I would recommend BlackPantsLegion aka Tex. Though most of his SS13 videos are raw and unedited. Some shorter, others longer. Some exciting, others very laid back and calm. If you want to see a vomit flood in and around bar, watch "burrito doom".

If anything, Among Us would be the alpha version of Space Station 13. But, yeah, I imagine Space Station 13 was one inspiration for Among Us.
