No there are no orcs (though you could probably mod the game to add them). The game is about you starting a noble dynasty... and basically trying (and often failing) to keep it from falling apart after a few years. Your lineage will be graded once the last living heir has died or you've been stripped of all your land and titles. The game has an absurd tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, and is presented in a mostly historical accurate manner (except the Sunset Invasion DLC, wherein the Aztecs have crossed the Atlantic Ocean and have attempted to conquer Medieval Europe; this DLC has mixed opinions in the community, with most disliking the improbable and frankly surreal shift from other DLCs, which try to maintain a semblance of reality, essentially 'jumping the shark' or 'straining the willing suspension of disbelief').

I remember this one story about this guy who was hosting a tournament in CK2, but hit a bug in that the tournament wouldn't end. He was forced to either sacrifice a noble or risk a peasant revolt, repeatedly. Eventually he started running out of nobles, so he started invading other territories to "recruit" their nobles before immediately using them for the tournament. He went through _several_ different crusades and got denounced as Satan by the Pope, all to fuel the bloodthirst of the Eternal Tournament he was hosting.

Too bad it aged quite awfully, but I’ve yet to try to play it with mods. I spent two weeks of playing to beat it when I was a kid, and felt pretty accomplished when I did. It is a great game. I just wish Skyrim had been a bit morrowindy as far as quests and world building.
@Asrashas3 жыл бұрын
@@CChissel I personally still don't understand why people say TES3 aged badly. Though I understand that I'm probably not the usual clientele of the modern gaming landscape anymore. As I've had much more fun with CDDA, DF, SS13 and consorts than with pretty much any commercial game in the last seven or eight years. Though there's been a couple good ones as well. Slay the spire, was pretty good. Back to TES3. The mechanics are derived from the P&P sources/inspirations, and still work great if you understand that. All that's missing would be dynamic miss and dodge animations. And those are not even really done in modern real-time action games. In those games just every hit that visually connects mechanically connects. Which I find pretty lazy and boring, honestly. Since it takes away character customization options. Though I can somewhat understand if people say they don't like the somewhat chance-based combat in a game that at first glance does not reveal such a nature. In terms of visual prowess the game aged about as bad as any other game from its time. The visual design still stands out to this day, though. Now, people might be tempted to just chalk that all up to me having rose tinted glasses and nostalgia goggles. And to that I can only say that I first played the game about ten years ago, give or take. And back then I didn't really get too much into it, and probably did not even play it for 30h. It's just in the recent years that I really started getting into it. And I play vanilla (except for a mod I made to put some more furniture into a house I use). Well, ok. I guess I play vanilla-ish, since I use OpenMW instead of the original engine. But that does not alter gameplay. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. Blog post end.

No, it actually IS a historical game. He just happened to have a Warcraft mod on because this game has a bajillion mods you can play with. If you play Vanilla CK2, the game spans the centuries between 769 to 1453 (which is the year the game ends, mainly because they have another game series that goes through the years after that, Europa Universalis). And, if you play Vanilla, the devs were pretty good at researching the history of those times in many different parts of the world. (Well, mainly Eurasia and Africa. The "new world" hasn't been discovered yet.)

The fantasy stuff was mods. The unmodded game is more rooted in history (unless certain DLCs, like, say, Sunset Invasion, are active), although it has some weird stuff going on, like how the game developers apparently decided that Isabella II of Jerusalem's son should be counted as the son of Isabella of England, even though, in real life, their common husband married Isabella of England after Isabella II of Jerusalem died of childbed fever in giving life to said child in the first place...
@troythompson17683 жыл бұрын
Also, you don't actually need to buy anything for CK 2 anymore. Base game is now free, and you can now rent all DLCs in one bundle for a very modest (I think it's $5) monthly subscription fee.
@Luredreier2 жыл бұрын
The base game is free now, just get it. Then look through some of the DLC guides to see what you want to add to the game. Personally I'd take way of life for the flavor it adds and if you want to play someone not available in the base game I'd pick the DLC making that character available. The culture, religion, start date etc in question. There's of course s ton of feature you can add with DLCs but few are 100% essential.

ck2 is a great game and might be my favorite game of all time. Ck3 is nice and all, but cannot quite compare to ck2 imo, however I actaully recommend ck3 as a starting point of getting in paradox games. It has a tutorial, which is actually useful and it is quite a bit more forgiving and easy compared to ck2. However at the moment it does not come close to all the crazy shit that goes down in ck2. ps: in ck2 you can do almost everything by right-clicking character portraits. Dont use the convoluted ui when you can avoid it.
@newromanianmappernrm44202 жыл бұрын
Seeing how much you liked CK2, if I were to suggest any series to watch either on here or on your own, I'd say OPB's stuff is very good to showcase the game, especially it's mods, alongside Roll1d20 games (I think he changed his name to Mr. Streamer but eh), both of which have some very fun series. If I were to suggest any specifically, I'd suggest OPB's "Go West, Young Turk" and his "Messalian Madness" series, and I'd suggest Mr. Streamer's "Normal Man" and really any of his AGOT (A game of Thrones) series. In terms of stand-alone videos, I think AlzaboHD would be best both for Ck2 and CK3, especially his horses-only run which took the concept to it's absolute limits if you will.

Game-development these days are mostly about pushing out a half-baked buggy mess on time, and then patch the game towards a playable state as it goes along. Paradoxs approach is that they make something plain, listen to community feedback, and add something more based on that. Usually in the form of a DLC. For those familiar with the process, its far better than it sounds.
