Weckl started to put a beat down on all the drummers in STL in the late 70's, most of us just gave up...this guy was from a different place. Beyond chops...He had a total grasp of "Music"...This, Dave, is a gift from GOD or what ever you believe in. I love you and believe in your soul...You're destiny was to play with the great Chick Corea, and during your tenure you killed it. NO ONE played better that you! You have created a legacy never to be forgotten. Thanks.

Part of that is in Weckl's playing and technique. He's got himself "internally mixed," as he puts it; he self-mixes as he plays, adjusting his own volumes on parts of the drum set so it all balances out without the need for a front-of-house sound mixer to do much at all. He also uses an actual mixer at his side on stage, and sends that out to the front-of-house board. He likes to be in control of his sound at all times.

I began to gently dig into jazz about a year ago. I was/am primarily a blues/rock guitarist. I am amazed at the depth of mental and musical ability it requires to play at this level. So many people are wasting their souls on empty pop and rap music when one of these songs will take you on an emotional ride that nothing else can compare to. I am completely blown away by it all!

Frank Gambale. . . Met him some years ago when he was touring with vital information. Ridiculous player, a bit of a dick. Me and a musician budy talked to him in between shows. He thought he was being funny, or practical. He came off as a bit arrogant. A decent dude all the same.
