I play jazz piano and Chick has always been my greatest influence. Yes, there are legends like Bill Evans, Herbie, Monk, Keith Jarrett, Mehldau... but Chick was so inventive, from the use of modal/fourths in "Now he sings.." to Spain, to his trio work with the Akoustic band... I mean you name it. He also had impeccable taste when choosing the musicians he worked with. What a master, I will forever miss him.

I studied piano for over a decade but watching Chick here what differs most from my capabilities is not so much his fluid technique i am relatively decent with that, but it is his memory. As he learns a piece he easily writes what he learned like a pen on a white sheet of paper and it stays there for good ready to be played again perfectly. Somehow i have no been able to organize my mind to do that, memorizing is a long slow difficult process for me. It probably has something to do with lacking vizualizing my own body articulation and sensing fingers touch memory while playing. When i try to memorize i always feel like a blind man trying to cross a busy street or densely maze like market. I wished i knew how to relearn that and get that skill.

Most interesting thing in this is where they're discussing the groove of that latin-ish tune. the best choice would have been sort of an Afoxe. Tom Brechtlein sounds bananas. Deeper and groovier than the guy who replaced him shortly after, IMO. The SG licks and influence are a bit close for comfort though, lolol....

@@brendanhirst201adding to this, chick first encountered scientology through a narcanon, a rehab facility sponsored by scientology. they would preach scientology in conjunction with the rehab. from what i can tell, chick had some substance problems in the 60’s, although i couldn’t find much as chick didn’t like to talk about it. However I did find a picture of him in 1967 posing at narcanon with a few other celebrities who needed help at the time. from chicks perspective, scientology helped him get out of this rough spot in his life, and maybe it actually did to an extent. but scientology has proven to be damaging to his relationships and it goes without saying that scientology is a bunch of grifters posing as a religion. in spite of this, chick is absolutely brilliant artist, and it seemed that he stoped by heavily advertising it after the 90s, although he still donated frequently unfortunately.
