One thing I learned about transcribing chords is that once you've got the obvious, easy to hear notes (probably the top and bottom notes, and maybe some in between), and hopefully have an idea what kind of chord it is, you make a guess as to whether a particular note is in there, and then play that note at the same time as the chord in the recording quite a few times to attempt to draw your ear to it. If it is there, you should hear it once you've done this, if not, you move on and try another one. That way you gradually put the sound of it together.

Love your music man!!! But you do the same stuff I did with my students when I used to teach.; We make up rules as we go. The more we do, the more we hear.

Just remember there are only 12 notes! So if you find the root and the top note that’s two out of the five or so notes you are looking for in a given chord.

I don’t know what all these people are complaining about. How do you getter at picking out chords? By doing it. There are no shortcuts. It’s actually great advice to add and remove notes. That’s basically how I pick out chords. Adding notes, trying things. Then when I finally crack it I know it.

This is basically what I've done with guitar chords since I started playing. It's very good ear training. One thing, and this is very basic: it's easier to pick apart clean chords than distorted chords. Distortion has all sorts of overtones that can throw you off. But you take a song like Steely Dan's "Peg", which has some wonderful chord and key changes, and you determine what the basic chord is, if it's minor or major, a 7th, etc, then you go over it till it sounds right. Play it clean, play it slow. If you can do that, the guitar solo is easier, except for getting Jay Graydon's beautiful double bends right. Another great song to practice is "Gimme The Night" by George Benson. Jazz chords and sliding sus chords are great exercises. They keep your fingers and your brain elastic, which is what jazz is all about. Jazz is the music of change.

Angus Orvid that’s so true! I have often found on guitar and on my Rhodes, a note will be created by the overtone series. I’m not playing it but there it is clear as day. I find that incredibly fascinating! George benson is a monster guitarist. Steely Dan does unusual crazy shit and normalizes it for people. It’s so good the ear just accepts it.

I feel like knowing theory helps. Find the key of the song, then the bass and top note.... Not too crazy to fill in the rest, outside of jazz of course 😂
