One of my fifth great grandfathers fought in the 123rd Illinois Mounted Infantry in the Lightning Brigade at Chickamauga, and he was unfortunately wounded and captured, so this battle has a bit of significance to me. Love to see your play through of this battle. It’s not talked about enough, despite the severe loss of life at the battlefield.

If you're not trying to finish on day 2, you can pull your entire line back to the Lafayette Road. As long as you don't have either of their VPs you'll go to day 3 where you have a 12 hours or more to wipe them out.

This is great advice, but taking any CSA victory locations can end the battle on day 2 with a Draw. The Victory conditions don't make any sense. So it is important to not take any Victory Locations so that the battle goes to day 3. On Legendary, the CSA will attack suicidally all along the line, and you can get about 10:1, depending on the artillery force you have on the field.

I do this too...day 2 I line up my forces along the creek and woods on the left side of the map, so the CSA troops have to come at my men in heavy cover from open ground, then when the map expands I extend my line south. On day 3 I dont even use the fortifications either...I line my troops up in the woods on the back side of lafeyette rd and spend most of the day beating the snot out of the enemy troops as they try to cross the road, then counter attack to retake all the lafeyette rd objectives just before time runs out. As the union you dont need to attack jay's mill or brotherton rd at all to win, you just need to hold the road and the ridge objective that unlocks on days 3.

@@ninjafroggie1 I do the same thing. I avoid all fortifications until the end-game. I always use the wood for cover in this battle. These fortifications did better than I thought they would do, usually they are death traps until about Cold Harbor. But in this video they did fairly well.

The Brotherton position is usually one I try to hold in a right angle formation with the good positions covering the river in front of Lafeyette Rd. You get good defense on the river the whole way down and you get a nice cross fire with artillery. The woods to the north face the large field which is hard for them to cross and I try and mass artillery at Brotherton and run my line north in the woods. When they focus an attack you can swing around with skirms or cav and take the Kelly's Ford. They rarely threaten the Lafayette Rd position at all in my playthroughs and focus on the area near Brotherton Cabin and the river to the west of it.

when next phase opens shift a few troops onto the old objectives and cover the gape with the rest because this is where he will send cavalry in to kill your arty

As the confederates You can use the river crossing glitch on the right side of the map for the first bridge you assault. It is the same map as blackwater heights so you can get your units to the right and behind of the enemy and hopefully capture them rather than having them continually flee up into the top part of the map and going on a wild goose chase to catch them. Somethingcompass shows how to cross the river effectively in his confederate playthrough on the blackwater heights battle

If you don't take both objectives you lose... if you sit back and not take any objectives you force a day 3. Which puts you on the defensive and is a whole lot better.

So do you lose if you don't take Brotherton/Kelly's Ford or do you force a day 3 if you don't take them back? I have never got to Day 3 in Chickamauga as I usually hold a strong line from Kelly's Ford to Brotherton by the time the second day ends and it never lets me play day 3. What combination of objectives forces day three as opposed to a victory? It would be nice to wipe them all out like at Gettyburg!

@@Rayrard If you don't take any of the objectives and just hold your own objectives, you force a day 3. On day 2 I just push forward skirmishers or snipers to get vision on his artillery so my artillery can hit them. He usually will only attack you with sporadic forces; easy to defend. Then day 3 opens up; send cav to take the objective that opens in your rear; then defend. Its pretty fun. You have like 10 or so hours on this day to play. Wipe out his forces.. The original confederate objectives disappear.

@@chrispgraham1975 Hmmm, I've never tried this and I can't fully finish off the rebels on Day 2 because of the timer. It would be nice to get a total victory even if I had to cheat the system and withdraw in the last hour from my strong line just to trigger day 3!

if your looking for inflicting high casualties... see my outlined plan n previous video... if your looking to preserve your army holding in areas where you have cover and he would not is the best way to preserve... and then day 3 depending on the situation you could try to push i would not recommend it.... if you push early in this second day your able to take him out piece by piece... when his whole force is on the map if you haven't dealt with his initial forces he has almost too much to handle...

I went the long way around with just two batteries and attacked the fort coming down from the north. Then came up from the south after dislodging them from the fort and crushing them in the woods to the east of the fort.

I did not know you could pause like that and set where you want to move your guys, then hit play and they start going..that’s a game changer especially for n this battle IMO

A cynical general would allow a majority of those day one cavalry die & collect up all their lovely repeating rifles after the victory.

General I am jealous by your wealth of riches. How do you accrue so many guns? Is it by taking prisoners or maybe supply wagons?

Capturing guns after battles mostly. Supply captures just add to the money total.

@@TheHistoryGuy Thanks for the quick reply! I'm on Chickamauga Union on Major General mode and I always watch your videos before the battle to get pointers. I just couldn't believe how many weapons you had to sell. You capture the weapons during the battle? Is it by making the unit surrender?

Yes that is part of it. Also just winning the battle and gathering up weapons after it's over.
