Will the 400 trimmer head work on a Ryobi straight combi shaft weed trimmer, manufactured in 2016, with a full crank motor number RY251PH? It has an arbor pin or shaft that is threaded on the inside, with a bolt that screws into the arbor shaft that holds everything together, instead of being threaded on the outside of the arbor shaft. If the 400 will work, what arbor adapter do I need to use? Oh yeah, you can laugh at me for buying a Ryobi, it's OK. I've been using it since 2016 to trim my 1+ acres and it keeps on trimmin, but the trimmer head is now cracked and needs replacement. Thank you for all the great videos and detailed instructions!🙂👍

Hi Bre. Greetings from Tupelo, MS. I just bought a Shindaiwa T262 trimmer and it came with the Speedfeed 400 installed. The trimmer owner’s manual only talks about .095” line being the biggest choice, but the SF says that it has a maximum of .105” line. Will it damage my trimmer to run the .105”? I’m a homeowner, not a commercial person. It is a 25.4 cc motor. I know about needing power to turn the head if line size increases, but .010” difference doesn’t seem like a huge deal. Would .105” be better for chain-link fences and concrete than the .095”? Your thoughts. Thanks.

Im older and I always used line replacement time to take a sit down break with a cold ice tea, a smoke and too refeed some more line. Now the mrs who loves to watch me work, says, I bought you the speed feed so it would help you get done faster, but it still takes you the same amount of time to finish as the old head. I said... Oh....I thought you got the speed feed so I could enjoy more of my breaks... Besides I can't fill it with my hands full.... Raising tea in one hand and a smoke in the other, with a big smile on my face! Lol

Thank you so much for this video. I have a Stihl straight shaft trimmer and bought the Speed Feed 400 for it. I watched at least four different videos about how to install the SF 400 on the Stihl. None of them were specific on the “black” vs “white” insert or the “green” vs “gold” arbor or the “L” vs “R” orientation of the spool, so all summer I had difficulty getting the line to feed. I thought I was going to prematurely destroy the cap - trying to get it to feed. I saw you video and it turned out that I had the “white” insert in place with the “green” arbor and the spool was oriented with the “R” away from the head. WRONG! I took it apart and followed your video. Now the. SF 400 works like a dream. Again, thank you so much! You are a real asset to us unskilled homeowner types.

I happened across your channel about three weeks ago, this video in particular. I have been plagued by issues with my Ryobi trimmer head and a couple of different replacements just not working well. The stock head was just junk....wadded line up inside, causing it to snap and forcing disassembly to get it going again. The solid plastic blade things were also pretty much useless, breaking off all the time. The one where you have to put new short lengths of line in when they wear down was a bit better, but a monumental pain in the butt. Then I went and got a Speed Feed 400 for the trimmer. Hallelujah!! It works beautifully, doesn't wad the line up, pure tap'n'go joy. Now I see why Echo uses them as OEM equipment. The thing is just brilliant. Thanks for putting this out there, for me and the rest of us who struggle with crap trimmer heads.

I'm so glad I stumbled on this video. A couple of years ago, a customer gave me his Shindaiwa 22T, saying he couldn't get it started & I could have it if I wanted. I brought it home & discovered that the piston was broken. Bought a new piston & jug for $35.00, & fixed it right up. It didn't come with any paperwork, so I had no idea how to maintain the gearbox, so I'm sure it's dry on grease. Along with the fact that the string head that came with the unit, I have to cut string about 14" long & feed them into the head, what a pain. I'm using the .095 string, & they usually fly out of the head. So, the speed feed is going to be my next upgrade. Ohh, and I agree the 22T is the bomb. Love it.

As always we appreciate your videos. These Universal Speed Feed head are the great. One problem I have run into is if you are trimming around a Lake you will collect fishing line between the back base and head. When that happens it prevents the head to feed the line out. So, I have told the guys that all they have to do is remove the head and remove the fishing line between the base plate and head. But, instead they open it and loose the spring and cap and that’s when they bring it to me. Also adding a grease fitting to the gear head is convenient as well.

This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

Shindaiawa trimmers and they are the best on the market. I have been using the Speed Feed Head and would never want another type. I have had the same trimmer for over 15 years.

Me too. I’m using the one that the Shindiawa that I’ve got, came with (dealer recommended and installed). Have had it (them) for close to 20 years now. ABSOLUTELY LOVE AND RECOMMEND THE Shindiawa. I honestly have not had 1 minute of trouble with it since I bought it.

Buy a half dozen and put one in each of your tool boxes. The one you have is always in the other tool box.

Thank you for this video... I just fitted a SpeedFeed 400 to my Bosch GFR42 36V electric strimmer using the Green adapter (10mm x 1mm LH) and it went on perfectly. I also appreciate the tip in one of your videos about making sure you soak the strimmer line each season.

Another good video, this one on trimmer heads. I chuckled when i saw you then started cutting "your weeds at home" and thought of the old adage, "The cobbler's children have no shoes". Being of many moons old, my memory is not quite what it used to be so today, I started a new file on my iPhone of things you have taught me called "Chickmanic"', well ya!!

That sure does look nice and easy to use. However the stock head on the Husqvarna is also easy to use and has been working very well for 12 years for me so I'm gonna stick with that, at least as long as it works well. If it ever breaks I may try the shindaiwa head.

What a great video - and a great idea for loading a trimmer head! Can I ask what Shindaiwa model you have or might recommend? Is entry level good enough for trimming around things on a 2 acre place, or would you recommend something more powerful? Thank you!

its trash, i changed mine out to a HUSQVARNA T35 and man i love it. the stock one from dewalt is prone to clogging up quick fast and in a hurry

Didn’t know my mom’s dewalt had this feature until I read your comment. Now she can string it herself. Before I’d have to disassemble it to string it. I prefer the gas powered, but this is easy and convenient for her. Thanks!

I remembered you having this video from a couple of years ago. I just replaced the old head of my Stihl FS256rc with the speed feed 400. After 2 hours of use today, it works amazingly well. Thanks, CC

My original trim head died on me yesterday. Today I began my search for a replacement and came across your video. Discovering that this is the coolest and most efficient trim head that I've ever seen. Thanks for this tutorial! I liked what you presented and went out to buy one, using your link below. Can't wait to put it to use next week.

SO glad i switched to this trimmer head! Also soaking old trimmer line in water worked like a charm! Thanks

I did buy this head for an old Ryan 740, however one of the adapters ( for the clockwise turning shaft ) I did have to drill out and tap to 7/16 to make the head work on the shaft Seems all the adapters were metric, except for one, the black one, it was 3/8 x a smaller metric. However after modifying the adapter (silver) that fits into the white spool it all worked excellent! This old Ryan is 32-35 cc and is great for what I use it for. I realize this is an older video, Thanks Chickanic for all you do.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! Replaced a Stihl crap trimmer head with the Universal Speed Feed 400. The BEST. Sorry I took sooo long to make the change. Best trimmer head ever, and I've only used it once.

We weed whack about six acres of tall dry brush every year. Our replacement Echo trimmers came with this head and we hate them. While it is easy to wind the line from scratch, if the head hits a hidden rock that shears off the line from one or both ports, you have to take the whole thing apart, rewind the line and put it all back together again. The old style head just works better for us and happily they still sell them.

Adding this head has turned my piece of junk consumer model Ryobi into a beast! I only wish I had watched the install part of this video so I didn’t waste time teaching myself how to change the thread adapter. Thanks for the excellent suggestion!

Thanks for all the tips and info you provide. You've saved me a bunch of money and a whole lot of swearing at my mowers and other gas powered equipment. Thanks again!

Great Show!! Fun Fact, I found out today that the cap for the premix gas used for garden tools, actually threads on a Stihl weed wacker fuel filler. Try it. Great if you lose your trimmer cap.
