In the mid 90's I bought a Stihl FS85 straight shaft trimmer with the 2 hand handle. He recommended the Supercut 20-2 head. Been running it ever since. I have a extra spool that I keep on hand and switch out as needed. I didn't know what I bought until this video. Good review of the popular heads on the market. (I still have the proper size rod to take the head off. Came with the unit when I bought it new)

I've got the same trimmer from the same time with the same head. :) What's bothering me is that lately the line advances much less often and erratically, which often leaves me with too short of a line to cut efficiently and I can't do anything to advance it. If anybody knows how to fix it, that would be great.

The product information with my Echo Speedfeed heads state: .095 - 20 feet; .105 - 10 feet. I did the same as you, woundup the string until the head tightened up. Don't know how much it took up (maybe just shy of 30ft), however, the line heated up and melted to itself. It's best to measure off 15-20 feet and call it a day. I found it works perfectly with those lengths and sizes.

The other interesting point about engineering is that the stihl has an issue when you are bumping. The stihl has the recesses and grabbing points on the face of the spool which means when you are bumping they are hitting the ground, the uneven surface and valleys on the head are going to hit uneven surfaces on the ground possibly and chisel away at the head and ground more causing more marks etc. Where the speed feed has a flat and smooth surface which will not grind at the ground and chisel when you are bumping. It uses the outside perimeter to grab to load which as you said, is easier at your fingertips. I guess Sthil was foresighted and did not think about the affects of bumping on the ground with an uneven head underside surface rather than just thinking about how you grab it to wind.

A word of advice for all people that are going to trimm their garden. Cut the entire yarn of line into 3 or 4 meter long pieces. That way you will save a lot of time and some nerves trying to unwind the yarn of line. It will be much quicker to spool the trimmer head that way.

Not sure where you got 10' from? "Accepts 20' of .095" line" - quoted from Echo Speed Feed 400 specs. "Accepts 25' of .095" line" - quoted from Echo Speed Feed 450 specs. If your trimmer line is old & brittle, you can soak it in a bucket of water for a couple days. That will hydrate the line & rejuvenate it. Others have shared this trick on You Tube. I've tried many, many different trimmer heads over the past few decades. The Echo Speed Feed is by far the best one I have used. Loading is simple/fast, & I can live with 20' loaded at a time. I also suggest checking out MaxPower trimmer line tested by Project Farm on You Tube. Project Farm clips are awesome information! No matter what trimmer I bought, I would toss the factory head (unless it's an Echo) & add an Echo Speed Feed on it.
@mainstreetmower2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! They aftermarket Speed Feed instructions say to use 10’ but obviously it’s wrong info
@driftlesshunter92002 жыл бұрын
@@mainstreetmower I know 20' of .095 will go into a Speed Feed 400 with ease. I think a Stihl trimmer head will hold more trimmer line because you are taking the entire head apart to wrap the line around the spools. When you do that, you are somewhat wrapping it snug around the spools. The spools could be larger I guess, too. When I load I Speed Feed head, my two hands are manipulating the trimmer head. I am not applying any tension to the trimmer line as it winds into the head. I have to believe the line is not wrapped as tightly around the Speed Feed spools. The nicest thing about the Speed Feed is no tools are necessary to do this. You don't even have to remove the head from the trimmer to reload it. it's actually easier to reload if you don't remove it.

I have an fs 250, and use the 31.2 I have actually never seen the string being feed like that, and went and searched it. You are right in the way it is supposed to go. I am surprised that the Stihl dealer never said anything during the times it has been in the shop. They even replaced the head, and restringed it the same way. Now that I think about it, I believe most people here string it the same way. Tropical climate here, so a lot of people run the big stuff. So I will try to explain this. Cut two pieces 17 inches. Take one piece fold it in half put both ends through the slotted holes, then inside send the two ends out the bottom round holes, and repeat for the other side. This gives four exposed strings. The largest I go is .130, have done this way for years now. I definitely want to try the right method, and see what kind of difference it makes. Thanks for the informative video.

@@mainstreetmower after about 20-25 years experience line doesn’t always come out and you have to open and refit the spool inside with the string line or the string line has melted and fused together which you mostly just need to detach and reset the line in the two grooves without having to re-spool the whole line.. Used different types of line standard Stihl line and aftermarket including twist which is my favourite,but only 2.4mm0.95, they say to sprinkle baby powder on it to reduce sticking together, I’ve had FS85, FS55 and the smaller FS45&38 which work great with the old tap head, hate the new style heads. Basic parts for 20-2 is eye lids $3 and $20 for cap replacement in Australia. I did buy a 30-2 head but yet to use will only run 2.7mm, might try 3.0mm just to see difference. I’m a Guard guy I hear every excuse under the sun why not to use a guard, usually I can’t see the edge, productivity but it’s usually because they can put the line out longer putting more stress on the machines. Contractors out there not using guards, they are opening up problems with warranty and even insurance claims when filming there action, plus giving other users bad habits that shouldn’t be promoted. Insurance companies love to not pay claims, if your a KZbinr that’s no one ammunition to a insurance company. Hence the use of the Guard in your video today on all blades, personally have used a star blade no 3 they are great for high grass jobs. You can’t make an Industrial video about welding in thongs, though you have all the other safety equipment.

My bump head wasn't rotating. Couldn't figure it out for a while then realized that dirt had built up on the inside of the bump and was keeping the spool from going all the way down. Turns out I must have lost the cap (if there is one) on the bump because it has a bunch of triangle holes on top and the cap is practically flush with the rest of the body. When I bump it on the ground, dirt smashes through the holes. Maybe I'll put some tape on it.

the advantage of the speedfeed is that when the line gets low, it will not fling out. That is because rather than putting in 2 pieces, one on each side into a grabber which loses the line when it gets low, the line goes across as one piece so the opposite sides keep in intact even with centrifugal force. That is why I like them. You do not need to cut 2 pieces and you do not loose it when it gets to the end or even well before like so many that go into a grabber.

Harry, on your Stihl FixCut 31.2 head it you ran the string through the elongated holes of the head. That doesn't appear correct. Shouldn't it be routed through the round holes so the string lays in the guide?

In my European country, they sell Stihl trimmers with tap heads (autocut) which are trash compared to auto-feed heads (supercut). Everyone here uses only a supercut head. It bothers me that you Americans cannot pronounce Stihl right, it is German (st is pronounced like scht) so you pronounce it like schtil not steal. Great video, condensed information simple explanations, eth was covered.

Thank you for your feedback, I am a proponent of pronouncing words as they are natively, I will make this correction in the future.

I got a supercut because I thought it would be better than bumping all the time. For the last 5 or more years I’ve always having problems with it not feeding and have to regularly take it apart and manually feed out some more line. I’ve given up on this head and now I’m going to get one of the easyloaders instead. Do you have any explanation why my supercut head always stops working, I am using the correct Stihl .095 line.

Is there an option youd suggest for an old fs 44 trimmer? Its an old family heirloom that id like to keep running but would like to modernize as well. Head is wore out/beat up and I see some eBay options etc. Would a newer head work on an old trimmer? Thanks for any help.

The fix cut trimmer head using a .155 heavy line for thick brush cutting is a bit troublesome to load BUT it cuts thick bruch well and last a while. My problem is to get the line to bend evenly while you thread the line through the holes. How can you get the correct bend on the line? When I get it close to the correct bend, the bend will protrude out a bit and shorten the cutting line from both sides.....Anyone with some suggestions?

😲 Dang yo you been using that "head" for years lol quite a player! 😝 Great video bro I like the stihl fixed head and I 4 string that sucker! Also your sapose to use the Lil rod in that head hole not the Lil screw driver. I do rock the 240 and 131r and there is a better way to string that fixed metal head I rock without a gaurd you just got to use some cents when you do it without gaurd ido 9. 5 inches of length and it get the job done.

In South Africa bump heads are for home users fixed are for professionals. I am struggling to get use to the fix line that came with my new pro machine. might go back to bump head. fix is a waste of string and they get worn down almost as fast.

Thank you for sharing. It's very interesting to find out what people think about these products all the way up in South Africa. We would love to know which one out of these is your most favorite head to go for?
