I just recently started getting into Chick's music. Looking back over these lockdown videos, it's clear he was such a great teacher too. I hate that he's gone, but in his final statement, he encouraged us all to play music and make the world better through it. Let's do that in his honor. If anyone wants to show me their music, let me know!

I can say that I am at this stage in my jazz piano journey- where I am working out my own way of thinking of the basics of music; of the structure of the 12 notes i.e my primary colors, of music- and how they relate to one another to create and deliver "the pleasure of sound"

Chick was such an amazing musician and person. Genius is a term used haphazardly to describe people that are great at what they do but Chick was truly a musical genius. Chick was able to impact people in a way that few could. I can't come close to understanding his thought processes. I'm just blown away by his output. Long time ago I came across "Crystal Silence" (the original version with Joe Farrell , or at least I believe this was the original version). And instantly became a fan of Corea. And I bought a vinyl of Return to Forever - was it Romantic Warrior? - I still have it somewhere, must go and find it. And there were pieces of an interview with HIM printed on the cover or on the inset, and he said something along "as an artist and a musician I have an obligation to find a language to convey something from myself to the listeners". That was his approach. And this was back in early 70's when jazz started to divide and many good and not-so-good jazz musicians became embracing harmolodic and free. Jazz in part became noise and Chick held on to his position, while many artists (not only the musicians) seemed to follow the logic that the least people understand what you're doing, the better artist you are. Some sort of an elitarian trap. Chick could do a lot of things and he did them with many musicians, never departing too far from this philosophy that the music must be understandable and as an artist he is obliged to build a bridge - and not the wall. This he was doing on stage to fellow musicians, producing excellent duos and trios which I think he excelled at (with Hancock, with Burton, with McFerrin, with Weckl and Pattitucci, to give a few examples). This we had a pleasure and joy to witness and experience as listeners, being offered the bridge. When the pandemics started, I noted he started with the master class thing and I said to myself there could not be a better time, place and person to do this. . And we lost him. . :-(

There are amazing musicians, and amazing educators. Sometimes you find both in one person. Chick was not one of them. His tip about learning music: "Take all 12 notes of the Western Chromatic Scale and learn as much as you can about how you can use them". What a great tip. Now everyone can play like Chick as long as they follow this simple advice, right? Well, I bet Rodger Federer couldn't teach us how to hit a forehand if his life depended on it. THANKS FOR YOUR WONDERFUL MUSIC CHICK! May it live forever.
@tomault30633 жыл бұрын
have to admit...I don't know what the hell you meant by that post.
@musictrainingonline3 жыл бұрын
@@tomault3063 Well, how did Chick's video help you with improving your playing, really? Do you now now exactly, how, what, and how much of it to practice, or how to reach a specific goal? I saw many videos of Chick answering questions about how to learn this and that. Non of them helped me with finding ways to play better. Now, great educators can do just that. They may help you develop an effective practice routine, expertly explain in detail the theory of a particular topic, and so on. Chick was a genius who does things intuitively rather than with a conscious mind. (There is a reason why he dropped out of jazz school after a few months.) That's why he can only explain things with a very brought brush. Like in his quote: "To learn how to play jazz just take the 12 chromatic tones of the Western chromatic scale and discover as much as you can about them". Don't get me wrong. I am grateful for every note Chick recorded, and will listen to his music till the day I die. But a skilled educator he was not, and he never claimed to be.
