Those black australorps are so talkative. I have one named Licorice, and she tells us when she lays an egg. She hollers at me when I walk past their yard. She sings praises to God when the sun is shining. lol If I ever redo our nesting boxes or get more chickens, I will definitely do this. Great idea. They probably love the privacy.

LOVING these shorter DIY vid's. My schedule is jam-packed now trying to get everything ready & in place for the unexpected. These shorter vid's allow me to watch them without all the interruptions of the chat distractions that tend to get off track that turn into long vid's I don't have time to watch. Time is of the essence right now for those of us serious to "GITTER DONE" while the getting is good. I think I am going to have to add on to my little cabin in the woods to be able to store everything I've got going on from pressure canning everything I can get my hands on while it is still affordable/available, dehydrating & storing, making "gallons" of vinegar (THAT IS GROWING BEAUTIFUL MOTHER!!!!) & now starting kombucha tea, tending my aquaponic systems, expanding my chicken coop/run, redoing my rabbit housing & buying all new stock, expanding my raised bed/container garden, propagating and/or buying/planting more fruit trees, setting up rainwater collection systems to water gardens, solar system(s) set up, & building a 2nd much LARGER greenhouse all while trying to figure out this crazy roller coaster ride of our weather the last couple of months. MY BRAIN HURTS but these things have got to be done. You are such a WEALTH of KNOWLEDGE and I sincerely appreciate all the tips & "affordable" DIY projects for those of us that don't have a lot of extra money and need affordable alternatives. Love & appreciate ALL you do for us to HELP US prepare...you are a GODSEND to many and will be blessed beyond measure for what you are doing to help your fellow man!

@@ladydebharr1704 Thank you so very much for the thought! That is more than I get from any of my family, even my grown boys that can sit and watch me work and not lift a finger to help! I'm 65 yrs old and work almost around the clock, literally, and catch a power nap in between projects or canning sessions. It is nothing for me to watch the sun rise after working all day & all night but I just grab me a cup of coffee and start the day over again. I just have this urgency within me that tells me I've GOT to get this done. Can't explain it so I go until I can't do any more. I was raised on a homestead but left it to start my career but once I retired I went back to what makes me happy...living off the land. It is just the way I live so I've always been putting back for several years now, knowing things would some day come to what we are seeing. God just told me to "PUT BACK" and he gave me the wisdom, knowledge and health to keep my homestead going. I have ramped up everything I do X's 100 in hopes to be able to get thru whatever happens. I know family will be coming to me for help even tho they have made fun of me, laughed at me and even called me NUTZ for doing all that I do. It sometimes makes me very angry when I see them buying luxuries, going on vacations, spending hours playing video games or watching TV while I slave & work myself to the bone. Rest assured, I could never let anyone go hungry "BUT" they will get what I DECIDE for them to have, "NOT" what they may want. They have had the same opportunity to do as I have done but chose not to so they will learn the hard way...YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW. I think of the Aesops Fable/Story of years ago, The Ant & the Grasshopper. If you've never read it, look it up as it is a good lesson to learn. I will get it all done, I always have but it would have been so much easier on me to have had some help. I wonder if I could get a clone of myself...seems there are lots of those around these days, or so I've heard :D. Until then, I will keep on til I "GITTER DONE" and be blessed for what I accomplished. May God Bless you & keep you safe in the days ahead. It touched my heart to get a kind word from a complete stranger that cares!

I use the totes also. I screw 2 totes on a plank of wood so the girls don't tip the totes over. Plus I can just pick up the plank with 2 totes connected and wash both at the same time.

Sure appreciate that idea Lead. We are in the process of moving and are taking our animals and the chicken coop my husband built is too complicated move. Price of lumber still high to build a new one, so we gone get us a dog kennel cage and a couple Rubbermaid containers.

If you end up putting a roof on the kennel, the corrugated fiberglass panels are nice, if you can construct a rise on one side to run water off. We made one of the panels clear, so it lets more light in in the winter. U bolts work nicely to attach materials to the top of a kennel.

I have an 8 x 12 coop thats about the size of a small shed. Its based on the "fresh air poultry house" by Prince T. Woods. I love our coop. Our girls free range. But i lock them in at night. The coop itself is fort knox. I have poop boards under the roosts that catch all the nighttime poo and keeps the bedding clean. The laying boxes are also in there. I keep them lower than the roosts so they dont sleep in thwm and get them dirty. I made a no waste feeder from a tote and 6 pvc elbows. Holds a whole bag of crumble from the feed store.
