I had mentioned to my boyfriend now that we are living out in the rural area we should get some chicken laying eggs someday.... SOMEDAY. About a week later he walked out of tractor supply and put a box of four 3 day old chickens on my lap. I said "what in the heck am I going to do with these, I know nothing about them!?" Marched him right back in to buy all of the necessities. I almost re-homed them a few times because I doubted myself. It's now 5 weeks later and I can't even tell you how in love I am! He just made them the most amazing big girl house yesterday with runs and ladders etc. I sat out there for hours like an excited nervous mother waiting for them to use their new ladder bc I didn't want to miss it! They are four black ones with a couple lighter spots on them that I cannot identify for the life of me!? Three are quite large and one is the runtish and I just adore her she's my sweet girl. We seem to bond over a few pasty butts removal sessions. Lol Love your channel subscribing now! You're the best. 😁🐓🐔🐥💗

Do you post them on ig? I too want to have chicken but still afraid and clueless about the mess. Now i got baby bird from a friend, it's a rescued baby bird. Luckily the bird is omnivore type. I blend oat, and other seed, put little bit or dry fruit and mix them with banana when i feed it. Now my head is full on how to educate it to be able to take dust bath and learn to find food. Will be much fun to teach but also i worried alot.Im planning to free the bird later when it become adult

Your life is never the same once you get chickens. They actually require a nominal amount of work and we get to eat the eggs and the chicken, when the time comes. They are a joy to take care of and what I like to call “free country entertainment “. Lol Thanks for the tips on fermenting the food! I’m going to try that! I've had pretty good sucess with fermented feed (pellet form) the only time they didn't like it was when I let it ferment too long (5 or more days). If I let it go too long I think it gets too sour for their liking. I drain mine through cheese cloth laid in a strainer once the liquid stops draining I gather the edges of the cloth together and twist the ball of ferment to further drain the liquid. Once I get it to the consistency of moist sand I put it in mason jars and refrigerate what I don't use to slow spoilage. I can't say how long it could last in the fridge as it is usually gone within a few days I've never stored it more than a week. I was told by the farmer that showed me the process not to freeze the ferment as they thought it changed the texture or taste because their chickens wouldn't eat much of the frozen stuff even after it thawed to room temp. Sometimes I collect some of the drained liquid and add it to the next batch to speed up the next ferment.

Love this thanks! I've been fermenting my feed the past few months that I've had chickens and haven't been able to find much information about it till now. I just dumped a big scoop of organic feed pellets into a big bucket, filled with water, added a bit of my kimchi/sauerkraut/ferment juice as starter, left it outside with lid with holes, and it turned out great! Smells sweet and bubbles when it's ready. The chickies love it! I just keep adding to that bucket to keep it going. A general fermenting tip - sometimes white stuff will form on top which is a type of yeast, it's not harmful, just skim it away.

Henlo, friends! I forgot to mention that if your ferment smells alcoholic in any way, obviously don't use it. Only ferment NON-MEDICATED feed. :-)

I was just kidding[kind of]LOL My grandmother in mississippi used to have a pig addicted to morning glory vines[opium].If she did not get up early and find him some he would break down the pen.Those pork producers knew that morning glory vines gave a pig the munches and they could get bigger pigs.I am going to try fermented [with my chickens].The pig farmers in Mississippi used that method.Also [seriously]the wild spruce hens here in Alaska get drunk in the fall eating fermented berries and are very apt to try to fly thru a closed house window knocking themselves silly or worse.I really liked your video!!Thanks. EGGS ARE SO GOOD FOR YOU!!I hear lots of chickens around me this year. People expect hard times.I keep them all winter in interior Alaska with no external heat.They eat more but never get cold.I read a book written in 1901 from an east coast farmer that had open chicken coops.He found that closing them in in winter gave them respiratory problems .He was right.Have fun!

any standard yeast can produce alcohol.. that is if the yeast cannot breathe oxygen.. and you mention well water.. well... no no :) tap water in a small jar like that is fine, the amount of yeast will be a lot more by volume, i blend all sorts of veggie scraps, meat scraps, bones, grains.. boil them in a big pot, let cool to 30-40c celcius, then ferment and close the lid (not airtight) i find all minerals and nutrients steep and mix as well and chickens are less picky eating some stuff they normally dislike.. mines dont like cabbage for instance, but in a ferment mix.. they gobble it down..

I heard of one guy that mixes whole grains into a compost pile with an ongoing earth worm population in the pile. He lets the chickens scratch for sprouts, seeds worms, bugs, and keeps churning the pile until part spent, then adds more weeds, etc to the pile with grains until it is nearly ready to use as compost, then he uses part of the old pile as a starter for a new one. Cost is very low. He says he spends less than a hundred dollars per year for what looks like about 30 chickens.

I’m going on 10 years of having hens. I never in a million years would have thought I would have them. If you get some, read up on different breeds. They have different laying amounts and temperaments. They are fun and funny and bring a calm to me after a stressful day. I’ve raised all of mine from a few days old. The only drawback is finding someone to take care of them if I want to go out of town.

I have 11 assorted hens and a very sweet rooster. They are "spoiled rotten" and super healthy, because I did my research and learned about fermenting grains. (I was raised on a ranch, but our chicken flock was large and they were not pets at all. My folks 'soaked' grain -mostly oats- 24 hrs for the chickens but never longer, so didn't reap the nutrient boost and digestive benefits of fermentation. I didn't care for "chicken chores" as a kid, but I love my little flock now.)

I’ve tried fermenting their grain and seed mix a couple times and they did not like it. I was so bummed because I sprout and ferment a lot. They don’t care for sprouts and micro greens either. But, I made them an herb garden with wheatgrass and they love it! I plant a tray indoors and let it grow for a 2-3 weeks and let them go to town. I have three trays in rotation. Their fave herbs are lemon balm and peppermint. I also feed them rosemary and thyme.

I have 2-3 chickens that like to work where ever I am and I notice they really loved the seeds that were falling and they would jump up to eat the seeds from the plants. I made up bundles and hung in the chicken coop to dry and would drop a bundle down about every week. they loved it, gave them something to do on the really bad snow/ice days.

the crumbles and pellets will sprout? I think you mean just the seeds will sprout. I use 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, half a plastic trach can of water (mixed) and dump 50 lbs of whole oats. Let it soak for one week and then any additives I want to use (ropa,oregano oil,wheat germ oil,cold fish oil) mix thoroughly with the drained fermented oats and then mix 50/50 with dry feed (pellets, or other grain, crumbles). Chickens love it, will be extremely healthy and egg production will be up.

I feed them to chicks as soon as they put on wing feathers-not a whole cup of course, watch how they eat them and you cam adjust the feed. This is a supplement and a vehicle to add medications or oregano oil (ropa). If you only have a half a dozen hens you may want to soak 1/3 and see how that lasts you. You show all the essential steps and each key step in the process is shown with a "thumbs up". All the steps are simple. You also show feeding the fermented product to the flock. Love the intro. Question, if fermenting feed is better for efficiency then why haven't any of the big egg producers picked up the method? (I'm referring to the UK and Western Europe here, I'm not sure what the status quo is over in the USA/Canada). Since obviously feed cost is even more important in a commercial setting, if this change can half the feed bill then one would imagine it'd be well worth the extra labour required.
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 3 жыл бұрын
I can’t really speak for the big commercial houses but I imagine in that setting it actually isn’t more cost effective. It’s messier, too, so it would require cleaning of the equipment daily, etc. I just don’t think it would work in a factory setting. But I have seen large pasture raised farms with good practices do it and they love it!

Mrs. President, I fermented the unmilled by New Country Organics- it has A LOT of dust, in addition to the huge corn kernels (which hens eat last ) etc.. Do you still do the 2 to 1 ration of water to feed if lots of dust in your feed? Is that why you mix your final product with some of the dry feed?? Do you ever drain the water to get a more oatmealy consistency- otherwise , it will be like soup Do you ever reuse the fermented water to start next batch or too risky for microbes?? Thank you for all of your info. Your enthusiasme is refreshing too.

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard "leave chlorinated water out for 24 hours." That does not always work. It works if your municipality uses chlorine in the water system. Chlorine is cheap, but it outgasses quickly. This makes it less effective for an extended period of time. As an alternative, some water districts use chloramine. It stays in the water indefinitely, and does not outgas at all. Thus, it is effective for an extended period in killing the nasties that live in water systems. What you CAN do to get rid of either form of chlorine in the in you water is use Vitamin C. True. Look it up on the internet. You can de-chlorinate a bath tub of water with 1-2 Vit C tablets. It does not take very much. You can purchase vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in bulk in powder form. In the amount of water used in this video, a pinch of powder would be enough.
