I started looking at all the fancy videos on chicken coops and frankly you are the best. You are the best because you are practical, designs are simple and we can use our house hold items. Nothing fancy, all functional and just great!

Becky I watch a lot of your blogs but I just have to add some things to this one. 1. You must not have any predators or a guard dog. In most place the types of coops you have the raccoons, possum, coyotes, fox etc. would make quick dinners of your chickens. We have a saying in my neck of the woods. Chicken wire keeps chickens in and nothing out. Raccoons WILL chew through chicken wire and I've seen coyotes and dogs do so as well. I've seen it done numerous times and have had it happen to me. The night time shelter needs a much heavier gauge wire. 2. Your coop for your adult hens. Again in this area and I suspect most areas of the country the predators have multiple ways in. Over the fence, under the fence through the gap above the door.

shawnanagins775 why would you let your pet cats outside in a new home without researching the potencial dangers?
@nolig888
@nolig888 7 жыл бұрын
shawnanagins775 wow, goes to show what some people do to rent/sale a home. There are no predators were I live except for hawks and stray pets. My oldest cat (she's 5) knows the area pretty well (theres a park up front) and she goes outside but my newest cat (10 months old) has been raised to be an indoor cat because when I go off to college in a few months Im moving with my pets and its harder to get two cats use to an indoor life than one cat. Especially since the young cat is intact and can get lost looking for females.

My deadline to buy chicks is the 30th locally . The pick up date for the chicks is June 6th and I was really starting to get over whelmed with all the chicken coops I have seen so far as I am not much of a carpenter and I was like maybe building one might be too much for my skill set. then I came across this video and you show that not only is it possible but it is no reason it need to be all fancy , basic works very nice and it is more up my alley , thanks for posting this video

fully enclosed runs are A MUST! never build a run with an open top. you'll learn the hard way when you wake up one morning to see your entire flock taken by predators. ask me how I know 😉. also burry the wire about a foot under the surface of the ground to keep them from digging under it.
@juliannawagner8303

depends on the area, also some rooster breeds will help protect the flock from hawks. just keep the fence around 5f
@MadMetalShop
@MadMetalShop 8 жыл бұрын
Jumping for joy films hawks are not the only issue. Coyote are more likely to take your flock then a hawk is. I have both where I live and just recently lost a rooster to coyote right before summer hit. You also have snakes and wheasles to worry about. They'll climb right over and a weasel can fit though a 1inch hole. As well as snakes. Dogs and cats too. You have to build for EVERY predator in your area not just one. I don't see a legitimate reason to not need an enclosed run no matter the area you live. Also chickens can easily hop over a 5 foot fence. It's not uncommon for some breeds to roost as high as 12 feet! A 5 foot open top fence is going to be useless imho.
@juliannawagner8303

+MadMetalManiac74 it all depends on where you live and what you want from your chickens.
@MadMetalShop

Jumping for joy films but you're missing the big point here and that is what's the point of putting up a fence if they can just flutter over the dang thing? Isn't that kinda a fence built in vein? Why not waste the time and money and just do 100% free range? I would not rely on an open top run to keep any bird In or any predator out. I just don't see the point. maybe if you worked at home and can babysit the run all day long.
@juliannawagner8303
@juliannawagner8303 8 жыл бұрын
What I meant is that where some people love they dont have a high population of predators. Whereas in other areas like my home, the coop is fully enclosed, bottom of the wire burried down for coyotes.

When I started, I had to raise nest box and roost to at least 2.5 feet off the ground... Then up to 3 feet... I removed ALL climbing surfaces for any predators.. Thick sandy floor to keep hens from hurting themselves.. Gives me just a little more egg protection against snakes and rodents.. I have two runs for the hens. They spend at least one week on either side before rotating them to the other side.Thanks to my little Fiest dogs, there are rarely ever any snake or rodents near the coup....

Hi Becky, I must say, you make great practical and optimistic videos :) I live in northern Denmark Scandinavia on what I transformed into a homemade chickenfarm. Thats why your videos give me hope of making it even better with my next chicken adventure! Thank you :)

Nice set of videos you have. I was looking for an easy to clean coop. My wife is Filipina, and built a small one with a bamboo floor. it is very hard to clean but she doesn't seem to care. She says it is easy on the chicken feet and would have nothing to do with wire.

People talk about putting down linoleum on the floor and the chickens picking the linoleum apart. I put commercial plastic type molding like you see on walls at the side of a carpeted or tiled floor on top of the wood. (I got it cheap at ReStore - Habitat for Humanity. Now, I use a hoe and a dust pan to clean the chicken coop. It's just an idea and it's not hard on their feet. It's possible that there may be some linoleum that they can't peck through. It sounds like it depends on your wife, which is fine.

Ive lived on a farm in Peru and the chickens get to run around in the day then go on a high leveled coop, theres never been a problem with predators, because the dogs protect them. What ever goes with you is great, so if her coops arent for you, dont be rude about it. Its alright for Criticize her, but dont just hate because her coops are just right for her.

Wire across the top is absolutely necessary. Predators can climb. Also, if you have raccoon problems, the holes in the wiring need to be half an inch. Raccoons stick their hands through the wires and pull their heads off. If you have big dogs roaming around your property, the predators won't come close to the chickens during the day and are more cautious at night. Also, you need to bury the wire at least 6 inches down so predators can't dig. You can also put a concrete lip or fold the fencing down and out from the bottom. 4 sq. feet per bird.

That's funny, we have a rooster named 'Doodle'. Kok a doodle doo :-) To save the need of shaking the feed tin back and forth to move the food outwards, just insert some sort of home made plastic or metal cone (pointy side up) and the feed will always slide towards the outer, inside edge of the cone and never be in the centre of the tin. Make the base of the cone about an inch inside the size of the base of the tin. No more shaking of the tin, so you'll need another excuse to go in and socialise with the ladies other than egg collection.

I love your videos and homestead! I do have one question - although the coops are great and I plan on using your plans to build a run for my fenced in raised garden beds, none of the coops in your video looks very predator proof. A raccoon or possum could easily climb up and over the fixed fence and the walk-in coop/hen house (which I like a lot!) seems like anything could walk up in there and feast on your chickens at night. I didn't see any real door at all. I have a simple, nothing fancy walk-in house and coop, but we have had to do so much to it to keep predators out, including snakes. We had to cover the run area to keep out hawks, raccoons and possums, reinforce the door because raccoon are very strong and crafty and finally my husband dug a 12" trench all around the bottom of the fenced and covered run and laid hardware cloth/wire because critters were digging their way in - including a skunk! What are your thoughts?
@redshead8010
@redshead8010 2 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of her open, walk-in coop as well. If a bear comes along .. just forget it! For small predators I think secure posts in the ground heavy welded wire (cattlewire?) and well secured chicken wire over the top and around the perimeter. 🤔 Nature happens.
