LoL I call the 'deep litter methold' laziness too. Awesome nest boxes, thanks for sharing.

Hi! Great coop! We converted a large dirt-floor horse stall in our hundred year old barn a couple years ago; we do a deep litter with a combination of 2 parts straw (long and not chopped) to 1 part pine shavings. For us, this has worked remarkably. The straw lasts longer and helps suppress dust from the shavings (which irritates the chickens' lungs and will cause sneezing and wheezing), while the pine shavings help absorb moisture more quickly. They do a great job of turning it, but I usually go in once a week or two to turn it (or as needed). It composts very well, and I typically harvest about 70% of it in the fall and replace it with fresh; the finished compost I place around my berry plants for the winter, and let the rest season overwinter to add to my garden in the spring.

good to know, I may have to give it a realistic try and see if it helps me in my situation. I normally just hual it out and compost it with the rest but I suppose the chickens may help it break down quicker. If I have to turn it myself weekly though it won't work in the winter when it is frozen.

We have pretty cold winters here in Eastern WA, it gets several degrees below zero for up to 2 weeks out of the winter; if you freshen their coop in early fall, it will compost in their coop well enough to actually stay warm (and help keep them warm) in the winter; ours hasn't had any issues with freezing. Hope that helps!

I like the coop. Me and a friend of mine built 3 like that in his barn. 2 were breeding coops with large outside runs. The other was a grow out coop. We built a huge brooder that had slide in dividers. We had a big commercial incubator also. We were breeding French Copper Marans of all color varieties plus Amercuas and the cross bred Olive Eggers. Good luck with your chickens.

Seems all you have to do is open the back of the coup to get to the Nesting boxes from the rear. I like that you have MORE Nesting boxes than I have NORMALLY seen in most Chicken operations.

I don't know your area, but here in Ga. we have tons of pine straw. the pine straw works good, it acts like straw but it isn't as dusty and they swirl it around and make a nest in it

I have not heard of that but I would love to find some, may have to look that up, thanks!

if you pine trees you have pine straw just grab a rake and start pulling it out from under them long needle pines are best I have a big colorado spruce I use the needles as a mulch and it works great.

Wondering how cold it is in that coop. I could see your breath as you spoke. Are chickens that hearty to cold?

the 1 for every 3 cracks me up. I went by that and made 12 boxes. I now have about 60 layers and they use the same 3-4 out of the 12 LOL.

We have roughly the same number of hens as you. I'm just curious, do you feed your hens conventional feed or organic? I've never had this many chickens before and this organic feed is really breaking the bank for us!
@SSLFamilyDad8 жыл бұрын
no organic feed for us yet. We are doing local feed only but not organic. We are going to try to grow some food for them to see if we can supply them feed for most of the year and then we may do the more expensive organic feed for through the winter.

When you make stuff instead of just videotaping you working we need dimensions of the wood you are cutting how much and type of wood, lay out etc. 2 pieces of osb cut long wise in 13 inch strips etc you get the idea…..
