What a great idea! If you run the top boxes upside down so there is a roof, you will probably have better luck with them going in the top ones 😉

Hens are about the pecking order. They will roost as high up as possible, always. 4 hens to one nest box is a good ratio. They like to lay where other hens have laid in the past so use a dummy egg in each nest box and they will lay there.

Love the simple coop. We just got 12 chicks, and are new to the whole chicken thing. We have a shed we are going to convert over to a chicken coop. I appreciate nice, cheap, simple ideas. Watching most people on KZbin build coops for probably thousands of dollars was a bit daunting 😬 Your son is adorable!

Same here we just got 7 chicks that are now nearly full grown and added them to the already family of 10. Just threw out all of our crates though :( can't wait to get started on their coop. Simple farming is such a stress relief.

What is funny is the way I got started was I found a baby chick in a Dollar General parking lot! Brought her home and raised her in my house lol! She is a pet. Follows me like a dog. But I got a coop and we have a big fenced in property so out she went. Then I bought a couple juvenile hens and I have incorporated in. They don't know if they want to come to me or not yet but they are all so wonderful! My husband fell in love with this fuzzy baby chick and that was it...hooked! She lays beautiful eggs and lays 6 eggs a week!

You mentioned they bunch up on the side of roost..that means they are cold and thats how they keep warm. Maybe you get too much of draft and might consider fixing that.
@ULoverUK3 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm sure you probably realized by now that you should have left a little bit of a "lip" on the bottom of those crates to help keep the bedding contained in them. I'm sure as the birds went in and out of them the bedding kept falling out of them. So did they prefer the crates or the buckets you made?

How do u protect your chickens from predators? Your chicken coop looks like it's not safe for them
@neytash17163 жыл бұрын
i do the same thing as him, i have dogs that stay around the area of the chicken coop to keep predators away. lost 2 flocks before we decided to move to coop to the dogs. the dogs will scare anything away, and they’ve killed a few predators too.
@neytash17163 жыл бұрын
@@El.Stumpy Unfortunately we do not have any livestock guardian dogs, we’ve had these dogs just protecting our property in general for years, and they don’t have a prey drive toward the poultry thankfully. They are both german shepherds! I do still keep an eye on them because of the breed, but so far they have shown no aggression towards the birds! The coop is only with the dogs, I don’t let the dogs near them while they free range, I’m always outside for hours watching them myself. I would love to get a great pyrenees some day though, beautiful dogs!
@grannypantsification3 жыл бұрын
@@neytash1716 my husband won’t let me have an outside dog. He is very hands on regarding pets, and thinks it would be cruel to leave a dog outside. Consequently, I’ve lost close to 20 chickens to raccoons, hawks, a Fox, a black bear, and probably a cougar. Now I keep my girls in a giant hoop house attached to their chicken house. But they were so much happier free ranging. I wish i had an outdoor dog😢

Why didn't you have nesting boxes to begin with?
@lisaapplewhitelynton36653 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your video and ideas! I have to redo the coop my folks built because everything is wrong. Mainly the nesting boxes are way too high (6 feet) off the ground. Now 6 out of our new batch of 18 hens are starting to lay. They have been free ranging. Two are using the boxes because they see the older ones up there. But I think at least 4 are laying out in the underbrush. I love your coop design, with that stall or divider. How do you keep Rodents out of your coops and the feeder? That was another reason for our coop redo. Keeping food out of the coop significantly reduced the rodents if not entirely eliminated them.
@DiMiTri-ys7ei3 жыл бұрын
6 east too much huh? I have 18 Hens and the only use 2 boxes lol
