Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on KZbin. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

I'm curious why you sometimes change the thumbnail and/or title of your videos after they've been up for a bit, is it to potentially get more views or do you just decide you like something else better? I've seen some other channels do this as well, has always interested me.

KZbin’s algorithm determines how many people it will show our video to by-among other things-analyzing how many people actually click on our video compared to all the people it’s shown to. For example, if they show our video thumbnail to 100 people, but only 2 of those 100 actually get interested enough to click it and watch, that’s a Click Through Rate of 2%. If the CTR is low, the algorithm stops putting the video into people’s feeds, so even our own subscribers won’t know we uploaded (unless they actually visit our channel page and check manually, but this is extremely rare). With this in mind, one of the biggest ways we can ensure the algorithm will share our video with lots of people is for us to create compelling thumbnails and titles that lead to higher CTRs. Sometimes, like for this video, we try swapping in new thumbnails or titles if the original one isn’t performing well. Our goal as creators is to have as many people view our work as possible, so we have to play the algorithm game sometimes.

Hey guys! I have been watching your videos since early 2019 and I'm just commenting to let you know I recently started watching the backlog of videos (a year of backlog, it's been a rough year for me) but the past 3 months haven't been the greatest for me physically (I have severity level 1 Cerebral Palsy) or mentally, just wanted to let you guys know your videos actually are helping me come around to feeling a little better each day, it's amazing what you've been doing not only teaching, and informing the community, but also taking us everywhere along with you. Onions have been cut, but also inhalers have been used (random Shane facts and humor is hilarious) you guys are literally one the driving factors for me starting to feel like me again, I just wanted to say thank you, and I'm looking forward to many many more tears and inhalers. My boyfriend of 7 months is physically disabled and I am still struggling to control my anger whenever I see him being disrespected or treated like a child. I truly enjoy your videos, and how you can expand people's minds. You may have already made a video where you ask, "If you have a partner, spouse, would you leave them if they break their leg? Would you leave thjem if they break both legs? Would you leave them if they become paralyzed from the waist down?" The point...asking people a spectrum of questions pertaining to 'would you stay, or would you leave?' Going down this route of questioning with anyone who questions the love you have for each other might open some eyes. What is the point where a partner states, "I will leave them if..." KUDOS many times over for showing that love is love. And, it is my true belief that many haters are the types that are sitting in the basement of their mothers' home, are 40, and have no experience at loving someone or being loved. As Hannah stated in at least one video, she answers why some guy doesn't have a girlfriend, and Hannah replies, "THAT'S WHY!" Love you two!

Questions for next Monday Grub-bag: How have you made your new wheelchair more comfortable and usable? I was under the impression you would have to go to many expensive fitting appointments to make it work better for you but that hasn't been mentioned. Just curious what changes you made to make it work better? And I know being able to get your hand on your joystick on your own was important to you- is that something you're able to do in this new wheelchair like you had hoped? If not, what adjustments could you make to make it work? I also thought you would be using your new wheelchair full time soon, so why haven't you?

Y'all are so fun to watch! I love your sense of humor! I have a question I've been curious about, if you feel inclined to answer. Shane, did you ever go through a period of time where you felt that if you did the right things (i.e. weight training, crystal charging, moose sacrificing (lol jk) etc.), that you could somehow reverse your condition. I was recently diagnosed with an illness, and I just finished going through a period of denial, I guess, or searching for hope. I was curious if you ever felt similar feelings of wanting/trying to reverse it in some way.

The shopping thing is really funny to me because my grandparents were married over 60yrs when my Grandpa died and this was Always their issue. The solution became that my Grandpa came shopping (he wanted the after shopping lunch) and would sit on a bench in the mall and read until my Grandma was ready to go. When the mall she liked shut down he took to just sitting in the car reading until she came out and told him where to go next. He got some people watching in, enjoyed time alone, read a good book AND got the good meal afterwards. And now I realize that it wasn’t just a compromise, it was an accommodation for his impatience and I always mention that when I tell the story bc we all need accommodations and they’re only made a big deal when Disabled people need them.

QUESTION: Hannah, have you ever lost your temper in public because Shane was being dismissed/ignored/a business was refusing accommodations for Shane's disability, etc. FOLLOWUP QUESTION: Shane, in these situations, where Hannah may become agitated, how does it make you feel? Proud of your wife for sticking up for you, embarrassed, indifferent, etc? These questions are truly coming from a place of love. I myself have an adult 7ft tall son with a disability and I wonder how it truly makes him feel because he can't always process and articulate his emotions. Love you guys!
