Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on KZbin. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

I also used to have more mobility in my limbs when I was younger. Losing it gradually over the years has not been easy, it's like watching your body slowly betray you. I agree with Shane, it's kind of sad but you eventually accept it and move on.

I understand the grieving, Shane. I have, at last count, 7 chronic illnesses and conditions. I have had symptoms since age 10 and now I'm 61. I don't go around with a morbid countenance, quite the opposite, in fact. Deep down, I grieve for things my body has robbed me of, such as a career, children, financial stability, owning my own home and living independently. I do try to make the most of what I can do. I celebrate the fact I'm still here, and that I didn't give up and lived long enough to benefit from new treatments and management.

@Creme Brulee Oh, that's very kind. Trust me, bitterness does sometimes sneak upon me. My niece has two beautiful children and it was so hard watching her being pregnant, and then being mum to a newborn. There's a sense of unfinished business with my career. But, I still try to do what I can. It's not the life l imagined for myself, but, I think, most people can say that.

Honestly... the costume was much better than I could have ever imagine hahahahah I have a question: how could someone without a disability get involved in the "disability world" and help? In my country there is barely any accesibility or even information or discussions about it, and I don´t particulary know anyone in a wheelchair, but I would love to help out in any way that I can. However I don´t want to seem rude or disrespectful or something like that by wanting to be involved even though I don´t have or even know someone with a disability. What are your thoughts on this? PS: I was really shocked by the handshake thing. I am from Argentina, and we never do that, we always kiss on the cheek to say hi, even with those we don´t know. It´s really interesting to know the differences between counties. Sorry if I spelled anything wrong. English is not my first language! Lots of love!!
