Hey! Is it the spirals as the one you've seen? The clips only seem to have become more common in the last few years and the flatbands are something that are hard to find but we'll worth it if you have growing chickens 👍

We've been watching your show and have thought about it. Trying to keep the rooster and the breeding ladies separate is an issue. Trying to find a quiet area to have our Orpington (or others) sit quietly without all the commotion of the other 57 ladies. There is quite a bit of activity!

It can be tricky - we use runs to separate the broodies in their own coops but that doesn't work for everyone!

What do you do to support your chickens during molt? And what feed do you use to worm them?
@EnglishCountryLife3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol. We have a video on moulting that shows what we do to support the hens kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2Olm2aDYqaJd6M If you have any more questions about moulting please let me know. In the UK we are lucky in that we have two feed manufacturers who supply layers pellets coated with Flubenvet the wormer medication. I'm not sure that it's available in the US ( which I'm guessing from your spelling of molt rather than the UK moult). We feed this for 1 week in March as a prophylactic treatment and at any other times that worms are evident. With free range chickens worms are inevitable at some point. Does that help?
@carolbabilon11473 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishCountryLife yes I am in the US. My phone auto corrected. I will research what I can find here. I asked our feed store and all they had were tablets. I am not about to stuff tablets down my chickens gullet. I like my fingers! ;)

What are your thoughts about using a plastic zip strip type of leg banding?
@EnglishCountryLife3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think they're only really suitable for both experienced chicken keepers and where there are adult chickens whose legs won't grow anymore. That's because if they are what I think they are, once they're on, they're on and getting them off would involve cutting them off so an experienced chicken keeper is needed to fit them. Too tight and they can't be removed safely, too loose and your chickens toes on their other foot can get tangled.

Very interesting! Wish one day I can start chicken breeding. Currently live in the city and keep only a few laying hens in my backyard. Always choose different breed and colour so I can easily distinguish them. The broody one hatched out 3 chicks recently and one of them is a buff Orpington. S/he is one month old now and I really wish it is a pullet so I can keep her. Feel in love with Orpington after watching you video and I want to hug a fluffy Orpington right now

You must read my mind. I’ve been wondering about this and have been thinking about getting leg bands or some of my chickens. Thank you! I have another question, though: I have 3 mama hens with babies. I can’t keep them all so will sell some to a neighbor for their laying flock. Since the mamas are raising the chicks, how long should I wait before selling the chicks? I’m thinking about waiting until they’re a month old because I’m worried that if I take them away too soon, the hen may go broody again. Besides, waiting a month gives me more time to interact with them and they are calmer around people. I had to hatch out 17 chicks in the incubator this summer and raised them for a month. They got a lot of hand feeding and handling. When I gave the majority to my neighbor he was quite surprised at how docile and friendly they were. The ones I kept will still jump up on my lap when I’m sitting down. I don’t mind keeping the new ones for a month to let the mamas raise them because they still let me interact with them and they are quite friendly at 2 weeks. What are your thoughts? When is the best time to separate them from the mama hens?
@EnglishCountryLife3 жыл бұрын
We wait until the broody leaves the chicks. This is usually 6 to 8 weeks but can be longer & occasionally sooner. Even then when selling we wait till the birds mature, but if these are a gift, once the broody has left them & they are fully feathered & can maintain their body temperature without the broody at night, then they are fine.
