Always had a few barred Rocks in the flock and they consistently had the largest eggs. Between 100 and 120 gram eggs. Real happy with the Novagens right now as well. Adding Leghorns next spring.

Thanks for the great info. I've found my Rhode Island Red to be my most consistent egg layer. I agree that Comets are great layers too. I free range my chickens 24/7. I hardly supplement their food. I gather 12 eggs or more a day. They roost in the tree near the house and are near a large fenced dog area, so they stay safe from preditors. Chickens are the best.

All hens have a certain number of eggs they lay over there lifetime.if you give them light to keep laying. It will just shorten the time. They need a natural break
@nogames8982 Жыл бұрын
They may benefit from a break, but the chicken will literally keep laying eggs, its whole life, and they are born with thousands upon thousands so you are not gonna notice a difference.

I have 6 Golden Comets in my flock of 13 hens (loss a Golden Comet and a Easter Egger to the heat in July). But my monster size egg layer is a New Hampshire Red. She was the last one they had, so I grabbed her! Her eggs are easily the largest I get. My largest chicken breed lays my smallest egg. I have a Grey Brahma that lays a really small pink egg!

My Jersey Giants lay nice big eggs . I'm n da process of raising high production layers also flashy colored birds . My goal is to get high production birds w great coloring features . I have Orpington, Plymouth Barred Rocks, Jersey Giants, Easter eggers which all lay great . All my birds laid right through winter especially after I stopped feeding the laying pellets and went to a local feed store n bought what they called a hog mix which is 16% . I've purchased Sapphire Gems, Rhode Island Reds, Calico Princess, Silver Laced Wyandotte for color, Copper Marans for dark brown eggs, Ameraucanas w tuffs and beautiful coloring . I'll b breeding my pick of hens with a Rhode Island Red and a Sapphire Gem Roo n different coops . This may take a few rounds to achieve my high production layers w beautiful coloring but as u mentioned feed and environment play a big role . Nothing better than having a few good brood hens around as the Orpington hens r .. Buying chic's is a hard task . I've learned to add a touch of cooking oil to their feed to help digest their grain n order to pass it without difficulty .. N yes I've had this problem w the chic starter grower feed too . That to me is over rated and over priced as my birds do just fine on the 16% hog mix . And of course all of my feather babies r a bit on da spoiled side n get their share of treats . Even the eight game chickens I have ; hen n 7 chic's like being pampered . I enesully bought chickens to help people if n when times get tough . I've given every dozen or 18 pack away except for 3 dozen . After realizing da cost of grain I've decided to start a breeding program n order to sell some laying pullets to compensate for da cost of grain . It gets costly feeding a flock of 30-50 birds . Much love and blessings.

Giants do lay a huge egg. I got some that are Splash and some regular black ones. One egg can make a good omelet. It appears that somebody is messing with the feed for chickens, and it has forced me to figure out what works for them.

I have kept Golden Comets, make sure you have access to cheap white lime stone powder for calcium, eggs are 54 grams to 85 grams, jumbo is 71 grams / europe 73 g extra large. Eggs per year ... overwhelming, lol. Keep a balanced diet with calcium. They do lay a lot, so they need good feed balanced and meat for protein. Need room in cages they do not fair well , and will reduce productivity after the first laying yrat

@MrCHATTERJEE01 golden Comets are the only bread to go with. Even with a not ideal feed, they will lay 5/6 eggs a week. Cage free. Feed they need grass/plants veg and protein in the first 6 months. I use commercial pellets and a good quality seed mix plus foods scraps and even meat. First 6 month i also feed alot of grass/ plant materials. They eat everything. I usa a 3 part bran to one part powered lime stone or calcium plus feed back crushed egg shells

I can't believe you don't mention the Jersey Giant. One egg makes an omelette. And while not a super layer, produces 200-240 eggs a year, which is quite good for a couple or small family. They take a bit longer than other chickens, but also make great stewing hens when older. This breed is great for eggs and meat in older hens.

Your egg count I think is off. Even the hatcheries don’t show golden comet breed coming out at 330. They show about 260 or more. Also large breeds usually don’t have a high egg count. Leg horns are a frantic bird and most become egg bound as well. I’ve raised chickens for many years and have had a huge variety of hens and raised turkeys and meat birds. Plus large breeds require more food and start laying much later.
@cindy261611 ай бұрын
There's always so much focus on increasing egg size and numbers but at what cost to the chicken? Would incorporating these tips to increase the size of the eggs also increase the chance of the hens becoming egg bound? Cancers? What about just wearing their bodies out from producing such high numbers of eggs? I've had Lohmann's before and their bodies are shot by the time they reach two years of age. The eggs they do produce in that second year have very weak shells and just aren't good quality. I would like to know more about breeds that live longer and healthier lives. Ones that have sustainable production numbers. Not all of us are interested in eeking out every cent in profit from our birds at the expense of their health.
