The first comprehensive video I have found on building a chicken plucker. I am so glad I found your channel. Will be butchering and hopefully eating our first chickens as soon as we can get one built and are on an extremely tight budget so I am really thankful to have found you. Now, get on it building a drum plucker. :P

Love your videos, John. I'm sure there are still a couple I haven't watched, but probably not many. Looks like a good tool you have there. I'm sure with some practice you'll be stripping those feathers in no time. Just wanted to say your water should be more like 140-150* and have a couple of drops of dish soap to release the feathers easier. Using this method and wearing textured latex palmed mesh gloves, I can easily pluck a chicken in less time than your plucker took, and I'm a novice. Just rub your gloved hand across the chicken, and it's amazing how easily the feathers slide out! Thank for sharing your tools, methods, and faith with us...whatever part of the world we are in!

I built the tub style plucker and love it! 6 seconds to a de-feathered bird! I think my total cost w/new pulleys and bearings was around 75.00- just loaned it too a friend who is cleaning birds tomorrow.

Do you think yours would hold up well enough to rent it out to strangers? Is it still holding up for yourself and friends? I'm on a tight budget and need to offset cost as much as possible. Trying to decide which to invest in.

Looks for work good. If you want a better effect you may want to run the plucker fingers on concrete to ruff them up a bit. That creates grip on the birds. Have fun, thank you for making this video. Happy BBQ to you.

Thanks, I really liked this set up, you did a great job, I hope I can get something like this set up for myself as I do have a butcher day coming up in a few more months, I surely would like to give this a try vs my usual skinning of my poultry, yup, I have ducks and chickens to do. I think I will try skipping the scalding part though and see how it works out that way for me.

That is awesome. Back in 2008,I was looking at building a chicken plucker in a 50 gallon drum. But the fingers they were selling we expensive. And you need a motor to mount.So I never built one. Wonder if this would work with a drum and motor too. Thanks so much for sharing this ideal.

Looked like it worked great. I see a bigger heavy duty model in the future....lol maybe like 2 caps with a short piece of pvc, and the bolt extending through far enough to be supported on end away from drill to take the stress off the drill? just kicking around some ideas. Wish i could be there to help bro.

Wow! That is so amazing. Very inventive. You are so clever. How many chickens did you process? You are right. Plucking chickens by hand is sucky.

I found a nice unit for plucking chickens but its in China and the delivery cost is a little much, So I well have to make something like this. I am thinking a fixed motor, Not a drill.
@richarddowner429210 жыл бұрын
yes me to. I was thinking just the same. a fixed motor with a speed controller. or even have it hooked to a light dimmer switch for a speed control... this looks like it will work very well...
@trevorfillmore69810 жыл бұрын
That worked great way better than by hand what if you cut a pice of plywood the same size as the opening of the cap with a hole saw and screwed it in would it help keep the other end from breaking?
@bonniemilligan84919 жыл бұрын
Great idea! That still takes a long time compared to dipping the chicken in boiling water for 60 seconds, then the feathers pluck like an over ripe berry.

I appreciate your video I made one and used it a few days ago on some chickens figured I would buy some muscovy ducks did not work so hot.... had issues with the all thread stripping in the chuck ended up plucking by hand I still have 4 more ducks to dispatch and pluck thinking I will weld a bead down the all thread and hopefully hopefully it will solve my issues.
@jnull010 жыл бұрын
if it doesn't you could try grinding one side flat. That might help the chuck to grip it better. Good luck Phillip, I hope it works out for ya. J

@Cdngardengirl10 жыл бұрын
On the Planet Whizbang unit, they recommend frequent spraying with water to help the feathers come off faster and easier. I wonder if that would make your unit operate easier.

I made myself one of these and while it worked great I managed to get my fingers several good wacks with spinning rubber. Painful as heck! Luckly I had the drilled hole off center and the whole things spun off and fell apart before I lost all my fingers. Still a good idea. :-)
