Thanks brother makes a lot of sense, not as flexible as I used to be at 61 with an old skydiving injury L1, L2, L,3 compressed and fractured,. Getting back into it after a 40 year break overseas landlocked so no surf. Been riding a lot of skateboard so legs are fit just loss of flexibility but working on it.

Great advanced instruction on an already used pop up as a beginner. It’s the little tweaks that help and that is a great tweak to my chicken wing pop up as you call it . 🤙🤙

Bringing the back foot first then the front foot gives a bit more time and seems have more control. I will try this way on Saterday! Thank you coach. 😃

Thanks coach. Love the water footage. It’s a realistic representation of the mistake followed by the proper pop-up

I went from the chicken wing to jumping straight from both knees which is good but I don't nail it all the time, I'm looking forward to trying this one, it's seems to be a middle ground between the 2, slower than the straight jump up but better technec than the chicken wing, need something like this as I'm only learning, this seems to be way more stable than the chicken wing, cheers dude 😎

Yes you’re right. This is the technique you should use! It’s almost the exact same as the chicken wing, the only difference is you lift up your ass to make space to put your back foot down in a better position without the knee dragging through the water. Good luck and let me know how it goes 🙌

Despite being a three step process, it looks pretty quick and smooth. I took surfing lessons years ago and I really struggled to get up in one single quick movement. I kept falling off. And that was despite my experiences with other board riding activities like skateboarding and sandboarding. I want to get back into surfing and I currently own a very short board. And it's going to be just about impossible for a beginner like me to pop up in one single movement on a small board like that. Yes, I still consider myself a beginner. This variation of the 'chicken wing' with the knees up looks ideal.

@@PatrickCooperPhotography-nw1pp Good luck with getting back into surfing. Maybe try sell your short board and invest in a bigger board? It will help speed up the process and help avoid bad habits.

@@shannonainsliesurf Selling the short board sounds like a logical step. But it has sentimental value as it was a present from my parents years ago. For that reason, I want to hold on to it. At first, I'll be using it like a boogie board - catching waves while lying down. Also practising turns while lying down.

Chicken Wing has nothing to do with what the legs are doing.... It's all about the arms and chest. On a shortboard that pop up with the back leg frist is a big mistake.

Thanks for your feedback. You’re right about the chicken wing..it’s also about getting the ass up. If the ass stays down the knee drags through the water during the chicken wing pop up. Most pro surfers plant their back foot first before the front foot.
