Quick historical fact: Solferino was the last battle in European history where the opposing forces were led by their respective monarchs.

That's not the whole truth, sorry. Neither Napoleon III. nor did Franz Joseph I lead their armies. Both were military amateurs and left this to their generals. The only thing that is undoubtedly true is that both were in Solferino. :)

@@giulianoradice4715 Is Viktor Emmanuel II important for Solferino? :) Sorry for this bad joke, I don't want to hurt your feelings because you are probably Italian. But I suspect that Victor Emmanuel II. was just as useless as Napoleon III. and Franz Joseph I. and his generals led the Italian army, or rather the army of Sardinia-Piedmont.

@@michaelwalter3399 Camouflaged units did exist. Austrian Jäger wore green tunics and were recruited from huntsmen. Jäger were also employed by other German-speaking states. The Italian Bersaglieri served in a similar role but I don't know if they used camouflage. The French had the Chasseurs, the British had Green Jackets. They often acted independently as skirmish forces and outside of the otherwise rigid command structure. In 1859, Kearny returned to France, re-joining the Chasseurs d'Afrique, who were at the time fighting against Austrian forces in Italy. Later, he was with Napoleon III's Imperial Guard at the Battle of Solferino, where he charged with the cavalry under général Louis-Michel Morris, which penetrated the Austrian center and captured the key point of the battle. For this action, Kearny was awarded the French Légion d'honneur, becoming the first U.S. citizen to be thus honored. Phil Kearny showed great promise in his service in the Army of the Potomac but was tragically killed in the last stages of the Second Battle of Bull Run.

On the Tower Hill at Solferino, Lieutenant Mone-glia, of the Light Infantry of the Guards, captured singlehanded six pieces of artillery, four of them with their teams. The Austrian Colonel who commanded them surrendered his sword. Lieutenant de Guiseul, carrying his regimental flag, was surrounded with his battalion by a force ten times the size of his own. He was shot down, and as he rolled on the ground he clutched his precious charge to his heart. A sergeant who seized the flag to save it from the enemy had his head blown off by a cannon-ball; a captain who next grasped the flag-staff was wounded too, and his blood stained the torn and broken banner.

Did a tour of the battlefields of the second war of Italian unification of which Solferino was the last one. Strictly speaking it was the French under Napoleon 111 and the Austrians who were engaged. The Italians shown here as bersagila with the feathered hats played virtually no part. Field Marshall Radetsky, for whom the march was written, actually suppressed the first war of Italian unification in 1848 which occurred in the then Austrian territories of Northern Italy.

The Bersaglieri were the soldiers of the Kingdom of Sardinia (not yet of Italy) who at the command of king Victor Emmanuel II fought the Austrians at San Martino, in the same day of the battle of Solferino and not far away (see Wikipedia).

At the foot of the Mount of Cypresses, General Dieu fell from his horse with a mortal wound as he waved his skirmishers forward. General Douay was wounded, and not far from him his brother, Colonel Douay, fell dead. Brigadier-General Auger had his left arm splin-tered by a ball, and won the rank of General of Division on the battlefield that was to cost him his life.

The guard behaved with really noble courage, only rivalled by the bravery and daring of the light infantry and troops of the line. The Zouaves sprang forward with fixed bayonets, charging like wild beasts, with furious shouts. French cavalry charged Austrian caval-ry; Uhlans and Hussars stabbed and tore at each other; even the horses, excited by the heat of battle, played their part in the fray, attacking the horses of the enemy and biting them furiously, while their riders slashed and cut at one another. The fury of the battle was such that in some places, when ammunition was exhausted and muskets broken, the men went on fighting with stones and fists. The Croats finished off every man they encountered; they killed the Allied wounded with the butts of their mus-kets; the Algerian sharpshooters too, despite all their leaders could do to keep their savagery within bounds, gave no quarter to wounded Austrian officers and men, and charged the enemy ranks with beastlike roars and hideous cries.

Schwarzkopf employed a frontal assault during Desert Storm to fix large numbers of Iraqi forces while conducting a massive flank maneuver. But back to the ACW, Grant used the frontal assault often & sometimes with heavy losses but he won the war. Sometimes he didn't have a choice since Lee was quick to maneuver ahead of Grant's larger & more cumbersome army.

Not really. In Napoleonic wars, apart from the disaster at Austerlitz, it performed okay. After Archduke Charles' reforms, it became a very competent force (much more than say Prussia whose army entered Napoleonic wars still entrenched in its seven years war glory, performed extremely poorly and even after 1814 reforms was inferior to Austria or anyone else, really) and was the first army to defeat Napoleon personally at Aspern-Esling. It then secured a respectable defeat at Wagram and together with Sweden drafted a plan that ultimately concluded with Napoleon's decisive defeat at Leipzig, arguably the most important battle of the Napoleonic wars. It lost at Magenta and Solferino to the French all right. It got defeated in Austro-Prussian war where Prussia was way ahead of everyone else and Austria was fighting a two-war front. In ww1, Austria had a disgraceful performance against Serbia, but given the circumstances, administrative mishaps and especially considering losing most of its fighting force and half of its multi-lingual officer corps early in the war, its subsequent performance against Russia and Italy was well above what could be expected. Overall, Austria-Hungary in ww1 did not do badly, despite the pop-history trying to paint both eastern and Italian fronts as children playing at war, only for Germany to come later and save the day All in all, Austria had a pretty average army that kicked somewhat above its pay grade.
