Sadly he got killed and WW1 started with the country not being prepared for war. Just having a huge number of troops doesn't matter if your military leadership and tactics are not good enough. For example nothing happened on the Italian front until Germans took the command of Austro-Hungarian army and tried the new Blitzkrieg tactic out and broke the Italian front which forced Italy to stop fighting for a time. For those blaming Franz Josef for WWI, sorry to say you have no idea. He was against the war, he had been refusing to go war for years. At 84years he wanted to end his days in peace. But the Sarajevo murder at the hands of serbian agents, changed things. He was under pressure from all sides, his people claimed for war, Germany pushed for war, The military wanted war. It was too much for an 84 year old man, but he tried till the very last to avoid it but had no option, the murder of his heir(whom he did not like) could not go unavenged especially after the demands made by Austria to Serbia had been rejected. @@kaletovhangar No, you're an idiot, because you don't know what you're saying. Or a scoundrel, if you know. The Serbian government decided little. In a terrorist state, everything was decided by a military clique. The "Black Hand", with the approval of the ruling elite, supplied terrorists with weapons, sent them to Austria-Hungary, incited irredentist sentiments. Russian historian T. M. Islamov: "In the historical literature, especially the Soviet-Russian, it is constantly mentioned about the aggressive plans of the Chief of the General Staff of Austria-Hungary, General Konrad von Hetzendorf, towards Serbia, but almost never about the same intentions on the part of Serbia. The fact that Konrad's crazy ideas about a preventive strike against Serbia and Italy were invariably rejected by the Foreign Minister Count L. Berchtold, the Archduke and the emperor himself is ignored. One of the few who clarified the issue was Yu. A. Pisarev, who sincerely loved the Serbs and other Yugoslavs, cannot be suspected of anti-Serbian sentiments. Referring to the situation in the Balkans after the Bucharest Peace of 1913, he directly points out that "the military circles of Serbia called for a campaign against Austria-Hungary." It should be noted that Serbia, the" victim " of the Austro-Hungarian aggression, whose behavior was largely determined by the confidence in the Russian cover, never intended to light a world fire: it also longed for a local war. But since it could not overcome its northern neighbor in order to "reunite" with the Bosnian and other Serbs of Austria-Hungary, it could not do anything on its own, then it was absolutely necessary to involve the Slavic colossus in its "small" war. Objectively, such a war was more necessary for it than for the Monarchy, only the military defeat of the latter opened up chances for the annexation of the lands of Hungary and Austria inhabited by Serbs, Croats, Slovenes to Serbia". The ungrateful are the Serbs. Thanks to the Habsburgs, the Turks were not able to finish off this wild people to the end in the 17th and 18th centuries, which I very much regret. But by the 21st century, the Serbian state had lost everything, even its historical territory - Kosovo. ))) There is a God!
