I have a couple ideas for your water collection. I think it would make sense to combine your mineral heating method with the tarp method. To do this, instead of using a dehumidifier that needs constant power use a hygroscopic desiccant like calcium chloride or epsom salts. You can absorb all your water in that way without constant power expenditure, then kiln out the water all at once a few gallons at a time. I bet the short burst of kiln power will be less than the constant dehumidifier power. Maybe just have a little solar powered computer fan for mild circulation. Second idea is to mount a big umbrella shaped tarp on a wheelie cart or an automated roomba thing that changes location when it detects humidity has dropped below a useful threshold.
@CribleyGaming Жыл бұрын
The buckets of desiccant could remain stationary in a solar still, picking up water at night, and getting rid of it during the day. Just change where the air circulates twice a day.

alternatively, why not just use "passive cooling" (atmospheric window IR emission) for condensation, since the moisture is created by the sun anyway. the humidifier is essentially just an easy way to collect condensed water, no real need to waste power for that.
@TheRealWulfderay Жыл бұрын
Interesting ideas. You might be right about the kiln using less power overall, but the advantage of using the dehumidifier imho is that it uses less power all at once, so in the context of a system on Mars, where there is effectively infinite solar power over a long time, but a strict limit at once (due to solar collection), the tradeoff may be worth it. Cody, you should have a drag race between the two methods! By the way, i love the idea of a giant roomba with a moveable umbrella to collect water autonomously. Very 1980s anime!

@travisgeorge2809 Жыл бұрын
I had almost forgotten about chicken hole base, and then out of nowhere, new episode to brighten my day. EDIT: I'd like to propose an alternate rig setup for your distillation. Bury one of your smaller tanks completely, and put shade over it. Have a hose coming from under the tarp to a relatively high point. Warmer air from under the tarp should create a natural draft to this high point. At the high point, put some coils to cool the air and some shade over that. From the coils, drop another hose down to the buried tank, all the way to the bottom of it. From the top of the buried tank, run another hose back to the tarp. This makes it a completely passive system that gets the benefit of the higher temperature differential, but without needing any moving parts or electricity.

Given the low amount of gas that fridge needs in order to run, you could revive your biodigester project to fuel it (helpful that you have a camping crapper too, perfect place to start!), they are pretty much a small candle flame type thing, so the amount of gas your digester made would be suitable, and of course there's always a gasometer system to store it too if there's any excess... :)

smart idea but he is simulating that he is on Mars so the exhaust would also be a task to find a way to get the waste air out and new air in without it being stuck outside a window but if that can be solved it is a great idea for constant cooling and water source but power is limited and A/C's use a lot of power. It still would be a fun experiment to see and to see how much water it can collect from just being in the air inside alone since very little outside air around on Mars.

I love the ChickenHole Base series, not that you ever release a bad video it's just, the concept, the work and the ideas/innovation that has gone into it just has me hooked. Who knows what mad genius thing Cody will have come up with next? The whole thing is just really cool and I appreciate the effort that goes into it.

Heh. My parents had an RV with that layout. That door was always getting in the way. I like how you turned it into an “airlock.”

Might want to check out the water you get from it. I remember ohio fish rescue had a dehumidifier dribbling back into their tank. I think they Said it was introducing excessive nitrogen back into the system. Could be a cool experiment

That makes sense, ammonia is also collected by dehumidifiers because of its affinity to water.

I'm still sad about buddy, but I'm glad you've got a new friend, and the new living space seems like quite the upgrade, how do house warming parties on Mars look?

For the water collection. I think you'd find a desiccant dehumidifier more efficient... certainly at this temperatures. Great work with the project... love seeing it evolve!
