From its lustrous shine to its ability to be moulded into intricate shapes, gold has inspired countless works of art and design. There are a number of reasons for that. 1) Extra silver does not hurt the inquart - a shortage will. It risks the gold passivating some of the silver so that it is trapped in the gold during the nitric acid digestion. 2) If the silver is obtained from jewelry, much of it contains solders, which reduces the calculated silver content. 3) The manufacturer is allowed some tolerance on the silver fineness. The manufacturer will use the least amount of silver necessary to meet the minimum fineness requirement - thus minimizing the cost. 4) The excess silver is recovered later and requires no additional chemicals when using the electrolytic silver recovery method.

Cody - I'd really love to see a community project where people mail you their gold trimmings from scrap electronics, and then you refine it and turn it into something. Not cost effective but I think it'd be cool for thousands of us to have a little part in something you made.
