Currently in truck driving school and learning this maneuver, I like the way it's taught in this video with hard turns. I taught that once you pull straight out the lane to turn the wheel 1 1/2 turns then reverse to create a 45° angle and after the angle is created, to make a hard turn the opposite way to get back in front of the trailer, etc.. I'm going to try this way with doing hard turns immediately and counting to 3 and see if that helps me better. Thanks 🙂

In New Mexico the course is ONLY 140 feet long. And if you fail the driving portion or maneuver portion of the test you have to do the PRE-TRIP, MANEUVERS, & ROAD PORTION ALL OVER AGAIN!!! N.M. is the HARDEST state to get a C.D.L. license!!! N.M. SUX!!

Whether this maneuver works for you really depends on the dimensions of the range you're testing on... if you are on a shorter range (like I am for my class, maybe only 150 feet tops) most of these tips are moot and you have to do the offset back completely differently.

The exam that I take in alberta only allows you a truck and a half foward from the bays. You are also only allowed 9.7 meters from the center of the bays in either directions. If you cross these cones you are automatically failed.

Correct, 3.7m forwards, then course opens up 9.7m to the larger side, and 6.0m to the shorter side depending on which bay you end up in after your initial blindside 90*

Rae kelser: When the truck is straight you look @ your flat mirrors when you have a bend in the trailer you look at your convex mirror. Hope that will help someone in the future.

This looks so much easier than the way I'm being taught right now, by starting out backing turning my steering wheel 1 turn, till my cone is even with the side of my trailer. Then hard the opposite way till my tractor & trailer are lines up. Then back straight & then hard cut to line up Then countersteer. I'm gonna try this way tomorrow & see if I get in trouble or it works.

Hudson Pacific the 3 sec rule is a general starting point. The trailer I'm using is 48 ft long, if your trailer is significantly shorter adjust your count to 1.5 - 2 secs and see how you line up. You may have to adjust your count a few times until it lines your vehicle up . Good luck

They're saying to turn hard one way or the other and back for 3 seconds? In school, my instructors told us to turn one and a quarter turn. Back until the center cone is at the rear corner of the trailer. Then hard turn the other way. Which is better? I passed the off-set but I encroached on the alley-dock and retest Wednesday. I have to do all skills again so, I'm curious which technique is easier.

I think your timing is off. You count 1 thousandth staff after the Truck is in motion, so you asked to count to 3 thousandths but the Truck actually moved more than that, so it is hard to follow this method.

I don't agree with you, it is very helpful, He said it, turn Clockwise, is the direction that the Manual clock turns, meaning Right, Anti-Clockwise means the opposite, which is left, the video is great, but not very well synchronised with commentary, this why people get confused.personally I learned from his videos.
