Police Chief Edward Flynn speaks to reporters after a Fire and Police Commission meeting Thursday night concerning the shooting of Dontre Hamilton. During the meeting, Flynn learned that a 5-year-old girl was shot and killed and addressed criticism that his response was "disrespectful and inattentive." Flynn discusses the impact of high-capacity firearms and guns on the African-American community while speaking to members of the press. Video by Ashley Luthern

I see your comment as I'm a good person, and I'm tired of people dying senselessly on the streets of my community. I was a Paramedic for nearly 10 years, and I still carry many of those faces and names with me, regardless of race. I saw a lot of young people cut down over and over overwhelmingly by other young people. I remember when this interview happened; I watched it at work while I was working on the paperwork of a 19-year-old who suffered a fate similar to the girl the chief mentioned. 10 years later the futility of my time in that position becomes more and more obvious every day.

black man commenting here...if what this police officer is saying is true concerning the stats in regards to suggested involvement of blacks committing crime towards other blacks...then i clap to what this man says...because not one black will ever protest against the crime committed by our own but we would rather say "dont snitch" and pretend like we do not see the foolishness committed by our own on a daily basis.....thats why i never jumped on the trayvon train and i had nothing to say about mike brown....although what happened to these brothers is unfortunate and wrong in my opinion i cannot demand justice when i dont demand it in my own house and my own community among my own

The little girl that Police Chief was talking about, was that Laylah Petersen? She sustained two gun shot wounds to the head while sitting on her grandfather's lap. The people that shot her were two African American males, with a third African American male who was acting as driver and a fourth along for the ride, they did a 'drive by' on the wrong house - technically the court indicated two men exited the vehicle nearby and proceeded to and fro on foot. Anyhow, that's an awesome Police Chief.

No child should ever have to be mentioned in something like this. The guy was very clearly as his knife edge regarding being called insensitive to a situation that was happening in the moment. It’s incredibly insulting that news outlets would rather report on ‘this guys so bad for being on his phone’ rather than ‘a young innocent child has died today’. So unfathomably insulting it’s hard to believe. But that’s how things work, a bad guy in status sells better than a child’s death.

Ishmael C Those people can go straight to hell. I’m so sick of them. And the worst thing is that many of these people doing the phony outrage and virtue signaling is coming from people I’m very close to. I wish we could prosecute the MSM for lying and pushing narratives (mind you, I am not advocating for censorship, I am advocating for better journalistic integrity). We have gotten to a point where it’s just descended into tribalism, and it both infuriates me and breaks my heart to see my country like this. We’re like cavemen. Now, is there still racism in the U.S.? Of course. But, it is nowhere near as bad as it was before the 1970s. In fact, it pales in comparison. There are two quotes that come to mind when I think of this. The first is “Sometimes it takes reminding ourselves of how terrible things once were, to see how much our world has improved around us.” The second is; “When everything is the worst thing that ever happened, nothing is.”

The worst part is you can tell this honest man, like many others before him, is a professional who is trying to do his job and he's fed up with all these over-dramatic journalists baiting him into admitting his department, co-workers, and ultimately, himself, are to blame for all the ills in these communities. Darn good interview! He told truths and as you can see he was speaking from his heart and was not playing into the stupidity of the media.. All they want to do is spread hate, hate and more hate.. They don't want to report news, they want to report anything that insights hate because that is what raises their ratings.. Not all police officers are bad, so many do care and try hard everyday for their community and what they see on the streets is horrible! I'm so proud to hear what he said..

The level of misinterpretation and lack of comprehension in these KZbin comments is heavily depressing. The Chief didn't say anything about minorities being the problem. He merely pointed out that innocent black citizens such as the girl who was shot are being victimized and killed, and that his goal is to try to keep everyone, including them safe. He also spoke about the emphasized blame and outrage the community places on the police for killing a microscopic amount of innocent black individuals compared to the ones being killed by high-quality firearm bearing criminals. He did not insinuate once that the reason violence exists is because people are black (as many commentators apparently think). I was very impressed with this reasoned, passionate speech. Very frankly he admitted that the police department was flawed and I imagine he would have acted quite differently if he were the officer to chance upon Dontre Hamilton.

He never said anything about the race of the people who committed the crime, just the race of the victims. His point is that people shouldn't focus so much on the extremely rare occasion of a police officer messing up and hurting some innocent person and instead be afraid of the amount of people (any race) with guns that are much more of a threat. There is nothing racist about this whatsoever.

Please don't say such mean things just because of the bad few in the black community. Yeah, I know the statistics and I hate them just as much as everyone else, but that doesn't mean I have to sit through some of you throwing out racial slurs that hurt MY feelings too. I'm not a killer or a gangster or anything. Criminals come in all ethnicities and creeds. All black people aren't bad, so stop acting like it. :(

Na Enne, the numbers in the parks aren't this bad, and I'm from there. The cause of this is not race, but ideology. Leftists have failed American blacks by removing the father from the home through government checks. So the consequences are women having numerous children, keeping them underclass in doing so. And boys being raised with no fathers, thus finding a sense of belonging and economic gains in thug culture to make up for it. The harsh reality is the government needs to start weeding people off of Gov dependency, and promote incentives for fathers to stick around. Also, get girls to realize babies at a young age leads to poverty, because it prevents higher education and long term job experience, holding down their salaries. Most blacks and whites know what the elephant in the room is, and it's nothing about race. Progressives need to replaced by true conservatives, especially black conservative men that raise their families and set an example. There's millions of them, and they should be promoted and applauded. Not rappers or football stars.

EnneSicksTeaPhore First of all. 80% is not a few. You blacks need to stop pulling the race card over and over again and start looking to improve yourselfs within your community. You will never get anyway until that happens.

Watch again and actually listen to him - oh and don't comment here until you actually know what an "ad hominem invective" is. He's not blaming the crime on minorities, he is listing the *victims* of crime. He's criticizing all the screaming people who use current circumstances to advance their own agenda without actully giving a damn about the real victims of these crimes.
