Opeth is one of my favorite bands, and Mikael Åkerfeldt is a genius songwriter, both lyrically and musically. The members are each virtuosi, and bring a lot to the table. Most of the lead work here is done by Mikael, but Fredrik is as skilled, but with a different style. This is how their shows are, not a lot of running around, but just standing there and melt your face off. Musically, they run from brutal to beautiful, often in the same song.

Never listened to Opeth before but I love the progressive vibe with the bass and complicated but melodic tunes. The instruments and syncopation reminds me of old school progressive bands like Dream Theater or Rush. So effortless yet so powerful! And the beautiful vocal landscape is amazing. Thank´s to Mike for suggesting this and thank you Chief for again exposing me to new and GREAT music

You're absolutely welcome. You're spot on with the assessment. Opeth is Prog-Metal, and these days really more like Prog-Rock. I think Mikael got tired of growling.

respectfully, Opeth IS old-school prog! 😁 They've been around since 1990!

@@TheSyncos I doubt he got tired of growling, he lost the power with the wear of years forcing it. He still sounds decent, but not anywhere near early days. My personal opinion is that when he realized he was losing it, he decided it was time to slowdown and change style.

@@explosivx43 It could be that, or it could just be that they changed what they enjoyed playing over the course of 30+ years. People are allowed to grow and change. Few people are still the same person they were 30 years ago.

Great to see another one for the Opeth rabbit hole :D I'd love to hear your thoughts on "Ghost of Perdition" and "Deliverance" by them - but please the studio version :) They are awesome live, but imho you should listen to the studio version first, as there are some additional layers, drum fills and an overall great production!

I'm rather new to Opeth myself, and I can confirm the live version of Ghost of Perdition at the Red Rocks is incredible. I heard both versions, and as a newcomer to Opeth, I believe you'll enjoy the live version a little bit better. Just an idea. Do a reaction to the live version, but add in a quick edit at the end with your thoughts on the album version too. That would be really cool!

Chief, thanks much for the reaction, and the shout out. Opeth is very special to me. In my deepest bout with insomnia around 18-20. Their music was really the only way I found to sleep. I believe you when you talked about the trance like nature of it, there's something deeply soothing about their music, even when it's intense or spooky. Ghost of Perdition next!

Brother! Thank you right back, I feel like Opeth is gonna be a very lovely journey indeed. I don't know enough bands that feel this way. Oh, my brother had savage insomnia for a good year or so when he was about the same age, that's very weird. Synchronicities! I can definitely see why they'd be really good for getting you into that sleep state of mind. This deffo hypnotized the fudge outta me. Ghost of perdition is actually next thanks to another legend on BMC 🥰❤️ Absolute legends.

The thing about this one is you have to immediately appreciate the live sound, and the cinematography, takes you to being there almost entrances you.. the interplay w the crowd that you didn’t show is amazing too.. and talk about a journey, this song is it 💀and I get the tool vibe ( in very brief moments) honestly when I went back and listened to tool after getting into Opeth they almost sounded basic to me, like an AC/DC.. I love tool I do.. but Opeth is another level ❤

Weird and melancholic are good descriptors for Opeth's sound in general. You would enjoy the rest of their work for sure. Opeth - Godhead's Lament! 🤘🤘

LOVE OPETH. They have so much diversity in their music from death metal, touching acoustic pieces to 70s prog. They are awesome live but listen to the studio version of Harlequin.

Heck yeah! So stoked to see you reacting to Opeth finally! 🤘 Also, if you're looking for more, I'd suggest The Drapery Falls, Death Whispered A Lullaby, and pretty much anything from Sorceress.

If you liked the outro riff in this one, they have a more infamous one. Deliverance (studio version beats all versions). The almighty of a headbangers wet dream.

Hard disagree mate. Red Rocks sounds much cleaner than the studio version. Maybe the official remixed version has a say in which one is overall more pleasing because of Mikael's powerful vocals from studio version, but hands down sound fidelity goes to red rocks, especially the intro and outro

I did Ghost of perdition (amazing) which comes out Sunday and I also did Deliverance.. wow..! That'll also be out soon. I didn't realise it was a different drummer but, at the same time, I think I did.. I talk about the drums a lot in that one. I'm having a BLAST with Opeth! Have an awesome rest of your week, my friend! Thank you for being here 😊🤘🏻

Hey bro, super cool that you're checking out Opeth. If you wanna keep checking out live shows from them, I'd strongly recommend doing as many from the Roundhouse tapes as possible because mikael's vocals are imo better there than the recent recordings, and it sounds more like the studio.

One of the best bands ever. If you do anymore live videos I recommend doing them from the Roundhouse Tapes concert. It's peak Opeth. ❤ may I suggest, Black Rose Immortal and Blackwater Park??

Unfortunately in this live recording, Mikaels growling vocals aren't that great. My recommendation for live recordings would be either something earlier like Demon of the Fall from the Roundhouse Tapes (kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6azd4d9Z5ulgKc) or maybe the live version of Ghost of Perdition from the Red Rocks (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmS2iXyNiJyleLM).

I love the reaction, but something is peaking out the harsh consonants on your mic which makes your commentary unlistenable to me. IDK if it is that sock around your mic or something else, but it takes away from everything great about this video for me. Cause I enjoyed everything else in it.
